Rex Walters broke out of a season-long shooting slump to score 23 points and spark a second-half rally as No. 1 Kansas beat Kansas State, 71-65, Monday night at Manhattan, Kan.

It was the Jayhawks’ 10th consecutive victory at Kansas State.

Kansas, voted No. 1 earlier in the day for the first time in three years, scored its fewest points while playing its sloppiest first half of the season and trailed, 32-24, at halftime after shooting only 35% from the floor.

But the Jayhawks, 15-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Eight, hit 70% of their shots in the second half and committed only three turnovers. They also wound up missing only five of 24 free throws in winning for the 20th time in their last 24 meetings against Kansas State.
