THOUSAND OAKS : Teen-Agers Arrested in Auto Burglary

After locating a stolen car in front of a Thousand Oaks pizzeria, sheriff’s deputies searched for and arrested three teen-age suspects, including one who walked away from a juvenile hall work program last month, authorities said Monday.

The incident began about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, when a deputy spotted a car reported stolen in front of a pizza parlor at Michael and Newbury roads, said Ventura Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Nagel.

When the three boys, whose names were withheld because of their ages, approached the vehicle, they noticed the officer and fled the area on foot, Nagel said.

The Sheriff’s Department sealed off the area and used a helicopter and canine unit to assist in the search for the suspects. A short time later, a police dog located one of the suspects hiding in a tree, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Kitty Hoberg.

Deputies found the other two juveniles at a nearby residence where one of them lived, Hoberg said.

The trio--two 17-year-olds from Thousand Oaks and a 16-year-old from Simi Valley--were arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft. One of the 17-year-olds had escaped a month before from juvenile hall, where he was in a residential work program for past offenses of burglary and auto theft, Hoberg said.
