SOCCER ROUNDUP : Kenyon Helps El Toro Defeat Dana Hills, 1-0

The El Toro girl’s soccer team, top-ranked in Orange County, scored early in the second half to defeat eighth-ranked Dana Hills, 1-0, in a South Coast League game Tuesday at El Toro.

Denise Kenyon took a long pass from Paige Viloria 2 1/2 minutes into the second half and beat Dana Hills goalkeeper Stephanie Boes for the game’s only goal.

Traci Jensen had five saves in her 10th shutout for El Toro, which improved to 14-1-3, 4-0-2 in league, and remained tied for first with Capistrano Valley. Boes had 11 saves for Dana Hills (15-6-3, 2-2-2).

“I was really happy with the way we played at the start of the second half,” El Toro Coach Kerry Krause said. “But for the rest of the 35 minutes, we just hung on.”

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 3, San Clemente 0--Kim McKay scored twice for Capistrano Valley (17-4-2, 5-2).

Mater Dei 3, Mission Viejo 1--Chrissy Whalen scored twice and Amber Escobedo scored once in the first half for the Monarchs (12-5-4, 3-1-2), who took a 3-1 lead at the half and moved alone into third place in league.

In the Century League:

El Modena 7, Santa Ana Valley 0--Kaylee Whitfield had three goals and an assist for host El Modena (13-3-2, 5-1-1).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 3, Katella 1--Kelly Bogan scored twice and Carly Wind had the other goal for host El Dorado (11-6-1, 5-1-1).

Esperanza 2, Los Alamitos 0--Jenny Parkison and Kerry Murray scored one goal each and Suzanne Benet had five saves for Esperanza (7-7-6, 4-1-2). Goalkeeper Heather Thomas stopped six shots for Los Alamitos (13-4-1, 6-1), ranked third in the county.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 3, La Habra 0--Sunny Hills broke the tie for first place with La Habra as Jamie Gardiner scored twice and Jenny Cunningham once for the Lancers (14-2-2, 6-0-1). The teams played to an overtime 0-0 tie Jan. 23. La Habra is 13-4-1, 5-1-1.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 3, Garden Grove 1--Sarah Brown scored twice for host Pacifica (7-5-2, 6-1).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 1, Brea-Olinda 1--Amber Dickey scored for Valencia (5-1-1 in league) and Shannon Breazeale scored for Brea-Olinda (10-6-3, 6-0-1).

Anaheim 2, Magnolia 0--Edith Hernandez and Michele Davis scored for host Anaheim (4-7-1, 3-3-1).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 3, Edison 1--Rhiannon Tanaka, Amy Peterson and Amy Rubenstein scored goals that gave visiting Marina a 3-0 lead as the fifth-ranked Vikings (12-4-3, 7-2) handed second-ranked Edison (16-4-1, 7-1-1) its first league loss.

Tanaka and Peterson each scored on first-half headers off passes from Marcy Crouch, and Rubenstein scored midway through the second half for the Vikings.

Christine Tyler scored with about four minutes left for Edison.

Ocean View 1, Rosary 0--Janee Sansone scored 25 minutes into the second half to give Ocean View (17-4-2, 8-1-1) the victory and move the Seahawks into first place. Robyn Leonhardt had six saves for Rosary (6-11-1, 2-7).

In Sea View League boys’ soccer:

Saddleback 5, University 0--Jose Rodriquez scored twice for visiting Saddleback (12-4-2, 6-2-2).

Newport Harbor 4, Woodbridge 3--Esad Pepic scored the game-winner with two minutes left for Newport Harbor (5-7-6, 3-3-4). Jason Szczuka scored 27 minutes into the second half to tie the score, 3-3, for Woodbridge (8-6-4, 5-4-2).

Santa Margarita 6, Irvine 0--Josh Keller had three second-half goals for host Santa Margarita (18-0-4, 8-0-3), the top-ranked team in the county.
