The La Canada High boy’s soccer team entered Wednesday’s match against Blair with a chance to establish a Southern Section record for most consecutive league victories.

La Canada, which is coached by Louie Bilowitz, won its 42nd consecutive Rio Hondo League match on Monday when the Spartans defeated Blair, 3-0. The victory tied the record established by Esperanza from 1983-86.

Musa Morais, Mike Thatcher and Josh Sweeney scored for La Canada, which improved to 13-2-1 and 6-0 in league.

The Marshall and Franklin boys’ basketball teams will meet in a City Section Northern Conference game Friday at Franklin.

Marshall, under Coach Alec Rivers, entered the week 7-1 in conference play after defeating Wilson, 55-51. John Kim scored 15 points to lead the Barristers, who played Eagle Rock on Wednesday.

Franklin, under Coach Robin Cardona, also was 7-1 after beating Hollywood, 66-53. The Panthers played at Belmont Wednesday.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team was back to .500 as it entered Wednesday night’s Western State Conference Southern Division game against Valley. The Vaqueros were 12-12 with a 4-4 record in the WSC and 1-3 record in WSC divisional play.

Glendale suffered a 67-64 defeat to Bakersfield when a Roadrunner player made a three-point basket with five seconds left at Bakersfield. Kenny Collins led Glendale with 17 points and Will Burr added 16.

Glendale, which plays host to College of the Canyons on Saturday night, has five games left in the regular season. The Vaqueros are hoping to qualify for an at-large berth in the 36-team community college playoffs.

The Glendale women’s team entered the week 9-13 and 1-3 in the Western State Conference after a 73-59 loss at Bakersfield.

Denise Dal Ponte scored 18 points for the Vaqueros, who played Valley on Wednesday and will play host to Canyons on Saturday.

Glendale has four regular-season games remaining.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s basketball team concluded the first round of play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wednesday night against Cal Lutheran.

Occidental entered the game 12-5 and 5-1 in the SCIAC, one game behind unbeaten Cal Lutheran.

Occidental, which plays four of its final seven games on the road, entered the week after consecutive victories over Caltech and Redlands.

Junior center Blair Slattery scored 23 points and had six rebounds in the 82-39 victory over Caltech. He had 30 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in the 111-95 win over Redlands.

Occidental begins the second round of SCIAC play Saturday at Claremont.

The Occidental women’s basketball team plays Friday at Redlands after defeating La Verne, 61-54, in an SCIAC game last week.

Betty Lu scored 19 points, Jennifer Kunz had 14 and Stephanie Francis added 13 points for Occidental, which improved to 9-8 and 3-2 in the SCIAC.

The Occidental baseball team opens its season Friday at Point Loma College in San Diego.

Occidental, under eighth-year Coach Jeff Henderson, finished 13-23 and 5-16 in the SCIAC last season.

PREP ATHLETES OF WEEK

Angelo and Bryan De Los Reyes, Verdugo Hills--Angelo and Bryan, who are brothers, each made six three-point baskets and scored 22 points to lead the Dons to a 75-68 Northern Conference victory over Lincoln.

The victory improved Verdugo Hills’ record to 4-10 and 4-4 in the conference. Verdugo Hills plays at Belmont Friday.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Blair Slattery, Occidental--Slattery, a junior center from San Marino, scored 53 points in victories over Caltech and Redlands.

In a 111-95 victory over Redlands, Slattery had 30 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. He made 10 of 16 field-goal attempts and all 10 of his free throws. Slattery is averaging 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.
