Share

Six officers and 12 representatives to the Democratic state central committee were elected at an organizational meeting for the 73rd Assembly District, which covers a large area from Laguna Niguel to Carlsbad.

Lee Walker, a Laguna Niguel resident who last November ran unsuccessfully for the state Assembly in the heavily Republican district, is the new district party chairman.

Walker, pointing out that 11 men and 17 women were nominated, said, “It was an excellent example of grass-roots democracy in action.”

South County representatives include Jenifer Massey of San Clemente, who will serve as the group’s secretary.

Area residents elected to the central committee are Patrick Birkett of Laguna Niguel, Dan Farrell of Dana Point, Henry Nachimson of Laguna Hills, Tom Potocki of Mission Viejo, John Sliney of Capistrano Beach, Gail Denison of San Juan Capistrano, Nancy Rucker of Laguna Niguel and Suzanne Tayler of South Laguna.

In April, the representatives will travel to the party’s state convention in Sacramento.

“With Bill Clinton in the White House, Democrats in Orange (County) and San Diego County are finding a new vitality in the party,” Walker said.
