LOS ANGELES : Zoo Changes Procedures After Elephant’s Death

The death of an African bull elephant last year has prompted the Los Angeles Zoo to update its emergency procedures and form a committee of experts to help in future crises.

The changes were recommended by a committee formed in March after the death of Hannibal, an aggressive, five-ton elephant. The committee’s report found that the death might have been prevented if zoo officials had watched the sedated creature more carefully as they prepared to move him to a Mexican zoo.
