PREP ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills Wins League Soccer Title by Beating Troy

Sunny Hills, the ninth-ranked team in Orange County, clinched the Freeway League title with a 3-2 victory over Troy in a girls’ soccer game Tuesday at Sunny Hills.

The score was tied, 1-1, at the half. Rhonda Partida and Jamie Gardiner scored at the 18- and 25-minute mark, respectively, to give Sunny Hills (16-2-2, 8-0-1) a 3-1 lead. Emily Keeler scored Troy’s final goal with about three minutes left. Troy is 11-8 and 4-5.

In the Century League:

Canyon 6, Foothill 1--Goalkeeper Tina Thompson, who has 17 shutouts this season, allowed her first goal in league as Kristin Guslin scored in the second half for Foothill. Thompson had five saves for fifth-ranked Canyon (20-2, 9-0). Foothill is 3-5-1 in league.

Villa Park 4, Santa Ana Valley 0--Susan Mendez scored two goals and Diane Dickey and Kathy Petersen one each for Villa Park (10-10-1, 4-5).

El Modena 1, Orange 0--Brenda Hinrichs scored on a penalty kick midway through the second half for El Modena (14-4-2, 6-2-1), which clinched second place in league.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 3, Cypress 0--Liz Willemse scored twice and goalkeeper Heather Thomas made four saves in recording her 11th shutout for Los Alamitos (14-3-2, 7-1-1), which is ranked sixth in the county. Cypress fell to 9-9 and 2-7.

Esperanza 1, El Dorado 0--Jenny Parkison scored a goal to give Esperanza (8-7-7, 5-1-3) the victory and put the Aztecs in second place in league. Kristee Schmidt and Nikole Scrivner had one save each for El Dorado (11-5-2, 5-2-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 2, Bolsa Grande 0--Cindy Stevens scored a goal in each half for host Pacifica (9-8-2, 7-2).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 2, Whittier Christian 1--With the score tied, 1-1, Shawnna Johnson scored off a pass from Sarrah Zethraeus with 10 minutes remaining to give the victory to Orange Lutheran (7-8-2, 4-5-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 3, Savanna 0--Julie Evers had two saves for Brea-Olinda (12-6-3, 8-0-1) in recording her 10th shutout of the season. The shutout broke the school record of nine set by Heather Colvin in 1991. Cynthia Barajas, Shannon Breazeale and Kristin Watts scored for Brea-Olinda. Savanna is 3-4-2 in league.

Anaheim 1, Valencia 0--With 11 minutes remaining in the game, Michelle Davis scored on a direct kick to give Anaheim (5-7-1, 4-4-1) the victory. Brandi Bermosk and Woody Taylor each had one save for host Valenica (8-8-2, 6-2-1), and Letty Guerra had eight for Anaheim.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 0, Laguna Hills 0--Goalkeeper Shannon Pickett had 10 saves for Trabuco Hills (13-8-1, 5-3-1), and Sarah Lang stopped five shots for Laguna Hills (15-7-1, 7-1-1).

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 3, Saddleback 0--Jenny Reid, Alison Johnsen and Anne-Marie Risquez had one goal each for host Woodbridge (8-7-5, 5-4-4). Saddleback is 2-13-1 and 0-13.

University 2, Newport Harbor 0--Jayne Nichols scored off a corner kick by Kathleen Pitchess 17:52 into the game. Jennifer Whiteley scored the second goal for host University (8-8-3, 6-4-3). Kim DeMayo had six saves for Newport Harbor.

Santa Margarita 3, Tustin 0--Annie Luke, Tiffany Brown and Meagan Lingo scored for Santa Margarita (13-2-8, 9-1-3). Tiffany Blackburn and Charlene Iest combined for the Eagles 12th shutout of the season. Luke, a freshman forward, set Santa Margarita’s season-goal record with 11.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 2, Capistrano Valley 2--Chrissy Whalen and Katie Ward scored for Mater Dei (12-6-5, 3-2-3). Renee Parker and Lindsay Light had the goals for Capistrano Valley (18-4-3, 6-2-1), which is ranked second in the county.

In South Coast League boys’ soccer:

Capistrano Valley 4, Dana Hills 1--Scott Shone scored twice on penalty kicks for host Capistrano Valley (16-4-4, 6-1-2). Stephan Rydequist had six saves for Dana Hills (0-8-1 in league).

In the second round of the girls’ field hockey Tournament of Champions:

Santiago 1, Marina 0--Yisel Carrillo scored with 10:11 left in the game for Santiago. (20-1-2, 13-0-1) Shannon Herstein had nine saves for Marina (18-6-1, 9-4-1), and Cossett Varona had five for host Santiago. The Cavaliers play Bonita in Thursday’s semifinals.
