The La Canada High boys’ soccer team established a Southern Section record for consecutive league games without a loss by defeating Blair, 2-1, Feb. 3.

The Spartans’ Rio Hondo League victory increased their unbeaten streak to 43, eclipsing the record of 42 set by Esperanza High from 1983-86. La Canada extended the streak to 44 Friday with a 2-0 victory over San Marino.

The Spartans entered the week 40-0-4 since their last league defeat, a 3-1 loss to San Marino on Jan. 15, 1989.

Masa Yamauchi scored the game-winning goal against Blair.

La Canada entered the week 14-2-1 and 7-0 in league.

The La Canada girls’ soccer team is also in contention for a league championship.

Carlene Pengra scored three goals as the Spartans defeated San Marino, 6-0, to improve their Rio Hondo League record to 6-0.

Pengra is one of four prep athletes from the area that will compete in the Sunkist Indoor track meet on Feb. 20 at the Sports Arena.

Pengra and La Canada teammate Sarah Dien will compete in the girls’ rated mile race.

Jeff Sneed of La Canada will compete in the boys’ rated mile, and Martin Hilke of Crescenta Valley will compete in the boys’ high jump.

St. Francis will compete as a team in the 4 x 440 relay.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team began its final push for a playoff spot with games Wednesday against West Los Angeles and Saturday against Santa Monica.

Glendale entered the week 14-12 and 6-4 in the Western State Conference and 3-3 in the WSC Southern Division after victories over Los Angeles Valley and College of the Canyons.

Glendale beat Valley, 74-71, on a three-point basket by Will Burr at the buzzer. Burr also scored 19 points during the Vaqueros’ 85-76 victory over Canyons.

The Vaqueros conclude their regular season next week with games against Bakersfield and Valley.

The Glendale women’s team entered the week 10-14 and 2-4 in the Western State Conference after a 68-52 victory over Canyons.

Kara Fitzgerald scored 15 points and had 14 rebounds for the Vaqueros, who played Los Angeles Pierce on Wednesday. Glendale travels to Santa Monica on Saturday.

Glendale concludes its regular season next week against Bakersfield and Valley.

The Glendale baseball team opened the season last week in the Palomar tournament.

Glendale lost to Palomar, 8-2, in its opener, then came back to defeat Mt. San Jacinto, 6-5. The Vaqueros, under Coach Steve Coots, were eliminated from the tournament with an 8-2 loss to Palomar.

COLLEGES

The Occidental men’s basketball team began the second round of play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a victory over Claremont that put the Tigers in a second-place tie with La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer.

Occidental entered the week 13-6 and 6-2 in the SCIAC after a loss to first-place Cal Lutheran and the victory over Claremont.

Blair Slattery scored 27 points and had 11 rebounds for Occidental during the Tigers’ 89-80 defeat by Cal Lutheran.

Occidental made 27 of 29 free throws during its 96-69 victory over Claremont. Sandy Brown scored 22 points for Occidental. Phil Engebretsen added 20 and Slattery had 19.

Occidental plays Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday and La Verne on Wednesday.

The Occidental women’s basketball team is preparing to play four consecutive road games.

Occidental defeated Redlands, 59-49, in a SCIAC game last week. Jennifer Kunz and Stephanie Francis each scored 16 points for Occidental, which improved to 10-9 and 4-3 in conference.

Occidental will open its trip at Claremont on Friday.

Occidental diver Marra Stankus will compete in the NCAA Division III championships March 11-13 at Emory University in Atlanta.

Stankus, a junior from Middlebury, Conn., qualified for the championships in the one- and three-meter springboard events with her performance last month during a dual meet against UCLA.

Stankus is the first Occidental diver to qualify for the nationals since 1946, when Olympic gold medalist Sammy Lee was competing for the Tigers.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Nancy Evans, Hoover--Evans, a senior, scored 37 points to lead the Tornadoes to an 83-36 victory over rival Glendale in a Pacific League game.

Evans, a Times’ All-Glendale selection last season, helped Hoover improve to 4-4 in league.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Dave Ulloa, Cal Lutheran--Ulloa, a freshman guard from Hoover who was a Times’ All-Glendale player last season, scored nine points and had six assists for the Kingsmen during an 89-80 victory over Occidental.

Ulloa also limited Occidental’s Hung Duong to five points as Cal Lutheran remained in first place in the SCIAC.

La Canada: 14-8; Melissa Lord scored 18 points for the Spartans during a 43-12 victory over San Marino that improved La Canada’s Rio Hondo League record to 7-1. La Canada plays Temple City on Thursday. 3. Marshall: 15-5; The Barristers defeated Eagle Rock and Franklin to improve their Northern Conference record to 10-0. Maria Fulay is averaging 13 points a game for Marshall, which plays Belmont on Friday. 4. Flintridge Sacred Heart: 18-4; The Tologs improved to 6-0 in the Sunshine League with victories over Marymount and Notre Dame. Flintridge Sacred Heart plays Marlborough on Friday. 5. Hoover: 8-12; The Tornadoes improved to 4-4 in the Pacific League with an 83-36 victory over Glendale. The Tornadoes play Arcadia on Friday.
