Dominguez Hills Baseball Team Tries to Continue Fast Start

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team is scheduled to play host to Chapman at 2:30 p.m. today in Carson.

Dominguez Hills, off to one of its best starts in school history, is 7-2 and is ranked 10th in NCAA Division II.

The Toros won a school-record seven consecutive games to start the season before losing to Arizona, 17-13 and 9-2, Tuesday in Tucson. Arizona is ranked eighth in Division I.

Junior first baseman Greg Bergeron has reached base in 26 of his 39 at-bats. Senior designated hitter Ariel Martin has an eight-game hitting streak, and senior outfielder Corey Woinarowicz had five hits in the two games against Arizona.

Chapman is in its second year as a Division I team. The Panthers are 5-5.

The Toros will play host to Westmont, a National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics team, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Loyola Marymount baseball team is scheduled to play host to Cal State Northridge in a three-game nonconference series starting today.

The teams are scheduled to play games on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lions (3-6) lost to sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 12-3, on Wednesday.

Northridge is 4-0 and ranked 23rd. The Matadors defeated 13th-ranked USC, 5-3, on Tuesday.

Loyola has been led by junior Shane Bowers (1-1), who pitched eight scoreless innings in a 6-0 shutout of Chapman last week. It was the first shutout for the Lions since 1990.

Harbor College announced that 13 players from its 1992 team will play at four-year schools in the fall.

Leading the way are defensive lineman Brandon Johnson, who will play for Memphis State; offensive lineman Jared Tuione, who will attend Brigham Young; tight end Anthony Griffin, who will play at San Jose State, and defensive back Eric Williams, who is bound for Ohio University.

Other players who have received scholarships include running back-linebacker Richard Guilfore and offensive lineman Jose Romero. They will play at Cal State Northridge. Running back Damon Moore will attend Eastern New Mexico; offensive lineman David Vida is bound for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; defensive lineman Reginald Taylor will attend Weber State, and linebacker Troy Cain will play at Southern Illinois.

Two players who missed last season have also earned scholarships. Defensive back Craig Weems, son of Coach Don Weems, will transfer to San Diego State, and defensive lineman Tyrone Barber will play for Utah State.

Running back Ira Moreland, who was voted the team’s most valuable player last season, is expected to walk-on at USC.

Harbor has placed four players on the All-South Coast Conference men’s soccer team.

The Seahawks, who were 11-7-4 and finished third in the conference at 7-3-4, had freshman forward Vince Rodriguez and sophomore goalie and defender Tim King named to the first team and sophomore defender Ricardo Robledo and sophomore forward Gerardo Benitez named to the second team.

Rodriguez, who had 15 goals and 39 points, was the second-leading scorer among Southern California community college players. It was also the second year in a row that King, a former player at Palos Verdes High, earned first-team honors.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s softball team will be seeking its first win of the season when it competes in the Cal State San Bernardino tournament today and Saturday in San Bernardino.

The Toros lost a doubleheader to Cal State Long Beach, 3-0 and 6-0, to open the season last week. Long Beach, ranked 10th in Division I in a preseason poll, gave up only one hit in each game.

Dominguez Hills had a nonconference doubleheader against Azusa Pacific on Tuesday postponed because of rain.

Children ages 8-15 are eligible to compete on the Rancho Palos Verdes-Marathom’s Track and Field team that will start its 15th season March 1 at Palos Verdes Intermediate School.

Practices will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. weekdays at the school through May 29.

The cost is $124 for Rancho Palos Verdes residents or $129 for non-residents, including a T-shirt and equipment.

The registration deadline is today for a men’s slow-pitch softball tournament for D-level players on Feb. 27 and 28 in Lawndale.

The cost is $125 a team plus $9 a game umpire fees.

The Pacific Aquatics Section of the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks is offering lessons in sailing and kayaking.

An eight-week beginning sailing class starts Saturday in Marina del Rey, and a five-week kayaking class starts Monday at Venice High.

The cost is $120 for the sailing class and $40 for the kayaking class.
