HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Nordhoff Romps Behind McSorley

Rachel McSorley scored a school-record 36 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead host Nordhoff High to a 64-47 victory over Notre Dame Academy in a first-round Division IV-AA girls’ basketball playoff game Saturday night.

McSorley, a junior forward, made 14 of 18 shots from the field and eight of 10 from the free-throw line for the Rangers (22-1), the division’s second-seeded team.

Notre Dame Academy ends its season 12-7.

In other girls’ basketball playoff games:

Newbury Park 62, San Marcos 28--The host Panthers held San Marcos without a point for the first 6 1/2 minutes of the third period in a Division II-A game.

The victory gave Coach Nori Parvin her first 20-win season in 19 years at Newbury Park.

Julie Wastell (13 points, eight assists, three steals) and Kara McKeown (11 points, 12 rebounds) led Newbury Park (20-6).

Alemany 80, Glenn 50--Samantha Rigley (19 points, six rebounds and six assists), Cathy Brown (12 points, seven rebounds, five steals) and Zevette Mitchell (10 points, eight rebounds) led host Alemany (23-4) in a Division III-AA game.

Westlake 57, Katella 47--Tracy Young scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the visiting Warriors (14-13) to a Division II-A upset.

Shanon Sincock also scored 13 for Westlake. Katella ends its season 18-5.

St. Genevieve 44, Kern Valley 39--Joycee Berin (23 points) and Carlisa Hamagaki (10 points, 10 rebounds) led host St. Genevieve (19-5) to a Division IV-A win.

Bell-Jeff 56, Paraclete 38--Cathy Flores had 22 points, 12 rebounds and six steals to lead the Guards (25-2) to their 21st consecutive victory in a Division IV game.

Lori Talley and Christina Ticsay backed Flores with 12 points each, while Carrie Breedlove added 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Paraclete finished 14-8.

Village Christian 49, Orange Lutheran 47--Lindy James gave the Crusaders (20-4) the lead with three minutes to play in the IV-A game.

James, who scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked a three-point attempt at the buzzer to preserve the victory.

Buena 58, Arroyo Grande 49--Mikko Giordano had 18 points and nine rebounds, and teammate Julie Hardy had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Buena (20-3) in a second-round Division I-A game at home.

Freshman Eboni Conley added 13 points for Buena.

WRESTLING

Central League finals--Monroe junior Jose Roberto Brizuela, wrestling in the 140-pound class, and his freshman brother Alfonso (125 pounds) won their weight divisions in the Central League finals at Bell High to help Monroe to a second-place finish in the four-team meet.

Bell won the title with 210 points, followed by Monroe (163), Granada Hills (63) and Fremont (43).

Individual winners and the next three finishers in each weight class advance to this week’s City finals at El Camino Real.
