PREP PREVIEW 1993: Girls’ Swimming : CAPISTRANO VALLEY

Share

Coach: Bob Skelley (fourth year).

1992: Third in South Coast League; second in 4-A championship meet.

Key returners: Summer Brown, So., diving; Cathy Carone, So.; Tracey McCalley, Jr.; Jeannine Pouey, So.; Darcy Stuart, So., diving.

Key newcomers: Kim Davis, Fr., sprint freestyle; Carrie Dean, Fr., distance freestyle.

Outlook: Skelley professes more dual-meet depth and less Southern Section strength, and even picked his team to finish third in the league race behind Mission Viejo and El Toro, but no one seems to be buying it. Almost all coaches polled pointed to the Cougars as the county-wide team to beat and named Ventura Buena, the defending 4-A champion over Capistrano Valley by a 173-169 margin, as one of the few teams that should be able to beat Capistrano Valley. The loss of Lisa Jacob, the 200-yard and 500 freestyle section winner--now at Stanford--and two-time section diving champion Joy Burkholder--a Michigan Wolverine--will be felt at Capistrano Valley, but newcomers Davis and Dean are important additions.
