The St. Francis boys and the La Canada girls soccer teams entered the week still alive in the Southern Section playoffs.

St. Francis (17-2-2) defeated San Marcos, 1-0, in a Division II first-round game on a goal by Tim Durkin. The Golden Knights defeated Paramount, 3-1, in the second round Tuesday.

The La Canada girls (15-4-3) defeated Buena, 3-1, in a Division II game. Shannon Smith, Kelly Williams and Marissa Eland scored for La Canada. The Spartans lost in the second round by Sunny Hills, 3-0.

The La Canada boys and the Crescenta Valley girls were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round.

La Mirada defeated La Canada on penalty kicks in a Division IV game. La Canada finished 16-4-1.

Long Beach Wilson defeated Crescenta Valley, 2-1, in a Division II game. Danielle Robertshaw scored for Crescenta Valley, which finished 10-7-6.

Jeff Sneed of La Canada produced the fourth-fastest time in the boys’ rated-mile event at last weekend’s Sunkist Invitational indoor track meet at the Sports Arena.

Sneed, a senior, won his heat in four minutes 31.92 seconds. Three other runners ran sub-4:30 times in the other heat.

Sarah Dien of La Canada finished eighth overall in the girls’ rated mile in 5:32.33.

St. Francis finished with the seventh-fastest time in the boys’ 4x440 relay in 3:38.08. Foothill of Santa Ana clocked the best time, 3:30.2.

Margarito Casillas finished third in the two-mile in 9:30.9. Martin Hilke of Crescenta Valley finished fifth in the high jump at 6-feet-4.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team, which finished the regular season 16-14 and 8-6 in the Western State Conference, will play Antelope Valley (23-8) Saturday night in the first round of the Southern California regional playoffs.

Glendale concluded its regular season with a 63-61 loss to Bakersfield and an 88-78 victory over Los Angeles Valley.

Will Burr scored 22 points and Kenny Collins added 14 points and seven assists for the Vaqueros in their loss to Bakersfield.

Collins scored 29 points and Burr had 20 during the victory over Valley.

Burr finished the regular season as the top three-point shooter in the WSC, making 72 of 162 attempts (44.4%). Glendale’s Ryan Asplund was second at 43.5%.

The Glendale women’s team finished 11-17 and 5-11 in the WSC after a victory over Bakersfield and loss to conference champion Valley.

Stephanie Ball scored 18 points for Glendale in its 64-63 victory over Bakersfield. Ball and Kara Fitzgerald each scored 10 points in a 77-38 loss to Valley.

Glendale’s baseball team entered the week 5-2 and 1-0 in the WSC after a 5-2 victory over defending conference champion Pierce last week.

Glendale was scheduled to travel to Valley on Wednesday, play host to Santa Monica on Thursday and Cuesta on Friday.

COLLEGES

The championship hopes of the Occidental College men’s basketball team ended last week with defeats to La Verne and Redlands.

Occidental, which concludes its season tonight against Cal Lutheran, entered the week 15-8 and 8-4 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Occidental lost to La Verne, 60-58, on a last-second shot by La Verne’s Joe Gonzalez. Sandy Brown scored 19 points and Blair Slattery added 11 for Occidental, which committed 20 turnovers.

Occidental’s game against Caltech on Saturday was postponed after the power went out on the Occidental campus seven minutes into the game with Occidental leading, 7-6. The game was replayed Tuesday at Caltech, where Occidental won, 84-55.

Occidental lost to Redlands, 97-95. Slattery scored 26 points for the Tigers and Brown added 23.

The Occidental women’s team entered the week with a 12-11 record after a 66-57 SCIAC victory over Whittier and a 76-56 nonconference defeat to UC San Diego.

Betty Lu scored 22 points and Jennifer Kunz added 10 for Occidental against Whittier.

Stephanie Francis had 24 points and Tanisha White added 12 against UC San Diego.

Occidental concludes its season Friday night with an SCIAC game against Cal Lutheran.

The Occidental baseball team split an SCIAC-opening doubleheader against La Verne on Monday and improved its record to 5-2.

One of Occidental’s victories was a 6-0 shutout against Westmont. Freshman Phil Grim gave up six hits and struck out five in pitching a complete game.

Occidental plays Redlands in an SCIAC game Friday.

The Occidental softball team achieved a milestone of sorts when the Tigers tied Southern California College, 0-0, in a nonconference game that was called because of darkness.

It was the first time since 1991 that Occidental had not lost a game or won by forfeit.

Occidental was 2-28 last season. The Tigers were credited with victories because Claremont forfeited twice.

Occidental plays Loyola Marymount on Friday.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Maria Fulay, Marshall--Fulay, a senior, helped lead the Barristers to victories over Hollywood and Verdugo Hills as Marshall finished its Northern Conference schedule with a 14-0 record.

Marshall opened the City Section 4-A playoffs Wednesday against Fremont.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Kenny Collins, Glendale--Collins scored 29 points as Glendale defeated Valley, 88-78, in its Western State Conference finale.

Collins ranks third in the state in free-throw proficiency. He has made 76 of 85 attempts (89.4%).

MISCELLANY

A triathlon featuring a three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim is scheduled for Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.
