Ventura’s Curry is Named WSC North Player of Year

Calvin Curry of Ventura College has been chosen as the Western State Conference North Division men’s basketball player of the year. Curry, a 6-foot-6 sophomore from Compton High, averaged 21.1 points and 6.8 rebounds a game to help Ventura to a 32-1 regular-season record, a third consecutive division title and the No. 1 ranking in the state.

Curry was one of five Ventura players to be named to the All-North Division team.

The others are sophomore guard Stephane Brown (12.6 points, 6.2 assists, 4.8 rebounds), sophomore center Michael King (9.1 points, 8.3 rebounds), freshman forward Brandon Jessie (16.5 points, 9.3 rebounds) and freshman guard Joey Ramirez (11.0 points, 4.8 assists).

Moorpark’s Elijah Maxey and Sean Martin, and Oxnard’s Ed Madec also were named to the all-division team. Maxey, who has signed a letter of intent with New Mexico State, averaged 19.5 points a game. Martin averaged 11.7 points and 6.8 assists.

G.C. Marcaccini and Rasaan Hall of Canyons, Ken Collins and Will Burr of Glendale, and Wayne Carlisle of Valley have been chosen for the WSC All-South Division men’s basketball team.

Marcaccini, a freshman forward, averaged 16.6 points and 7.9 rebounds a game; Hall, a sophomore guard, averaged 15.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. Canyons finished second in the division.

Collins (17.2 points, 5.8 assists), a freshman guard, and Burr (15.8 points), a sophomore guard, led Glendale to a third-place tie in the division. Carlisle, a freshman forward, averaged 17.3 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Monarchs.

Taft High shortstop Keri Borzello has signed to play softball at Missouri next season.

Borzello, who was an All-City selection last season, also took trips to Oregon, Arizona and Michigan.

Rik Provenzano, Marc Harisay, Persephone Lowery and Cela McPherson-Taylor of Cal State Northridge will redshirt the upcoming outdoor track season.

All four will be seniors in 1994.

Provenzano timed 1 minute 51.80 seconds in the 800 meters and 3:54.33 in the 1,500 last season. Harisay put the shot 56 feet 6 3/4 inches and threw the discus 157-2.

Lowery posted personal bests of 2:08.86 in the women’s 800 and 4:39.56 in the 1,500. McPherson-Taylor timed 55.89 in the women’s 400 meters and has a personal best of 55.04 in the event.

San Fernando High has scheduled an alumni baseball game for 11 a.m. March 6 at the school.
