SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Ocean View’s Single Goal Is Enough

Share

Although Hawthorne threw more punches--literally--Ocean View scored the one shot that really counted in the Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer quarterfinals Thursday at Huntington Beach.

The defending Division I champion Seahawks advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Hawthorne in a game marred by an ugly second half and a cheap-shot punch.

While the teams were exchanging postgame handshakes at midfield, Ocean View’s Cesar Hernandez was struck hard in the face by a Hawthorne player in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. Hernandez fell and remained down for several minutes while tensions between the two teams, already high after a second half filled with yellow and red cards, escalated again.

“We knew they were a hotheaded team and that something like this would probably happen,” Ocean View Coach Paul Kollar said. “I told the guys that if we won the game, look out.”

Ocean View administrators quickly cleared the field after the incident, and no further violence erupted, although numerous insults were exchanged. An Ocean View parent videotaping the game filmed the incident and Seahawk coaches said the Hawthorne player who threw the punch was identifiable on tape by his jersey number.

It was unknown immediately after the game whether a report about the incident would be filed with the Southern Section office.

Ocean View, which meets the Fontana-Morningside winner in Tuesday’s semifinals, scored its goal 16 minutes into the first half when Brad Walker shot into an empty net. The goal came on an assist by Luan Lai, who lofted a pass from about 30 yards out into the goal box.

Ocean View will be without Kevin Coye in the semifinals because he was ejected from Thursday’s game after being called for an intentional foul while trying to stop a Hawthorne breakaway late in the second half. If Ocean View advances to the finals, Coye would be eligible to play.
