BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Puts End to Loyola’s Season, 76-58

Tommy Walden led a balanced attack with 19 points as Huntington Beach cruised to a 76-58 Southern Section Division I-A quarterfinal victory Friday over Loyola at Cal State Los Angeles College.

On the strength of a 10-2 run, Huntington Beach opened up a 22-8 lead. Huntington Beach opened up a 32-16 lead in the second quarter, thanks to a seven-point run with Walden scoring five of the seven points.

Loyola never got closer than 11 the rest of the way. Tony Gonzalez gave Huntington Beach a 65-43 lead with 4:33 left on a double-pump two-handed slam, his second of the game.

Toby Bailey had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Kendra Adams added 12 points for Loyola.

Records: Huntington Beach 26-3; Loyola 20-7.

FRIDAY

Dorsey 64, North Hollywood 61 (OT)--Guard Terell McKnight hit six consecutive free throws in overtime to lift Dorsey to an upset victory in a City 4-A quarterfinal game.

North Hollywood, ranked No. 7 by The Times, tied the game at 56 in regulation when Fantasia Johnson scored a lay-up off a steal. Johnson led the second-seeded Huskies with 19 points.

Dorsey, which finished third in the Southern League, was led by guard Davey Fortson, who had 22 points. The Dons play Washington in the semifinals Tuesday.

Records: Dorsey 14-11; North Hollywood 24-2.

Westchester 74, Locke 70 (OT)--Guard Danny Walker scored 18 points, including seven in overtime, as two-time defending City 4-A champion Westchester won a quarterfinal game at home.

Walker made four free throws for the Comets’ final points. With 12 seconds left, Locke’s Demetrius Nettles made two free throws to send the game into overtime.

Leading 72-70, Westchester’s Ben Sanders stole the ball from Carl Conston and passed to Walker, who was fouled. After Walker made two free throws, Conston missed a desperation three-point attempt.

Conston led Locke with 20 points and Nettles had 18.

Records: Westchester 21-6; Locke 22-10.

Washington 50, South Gate 46--The Generals held South Gate scoreless in the last 2:29, and Dayron Harris’ free throw with two seconds to play clinched a City 4-A quarterfinal win.

Washington led 40-31 entering the fourth quarter, when South Gate went on a 15-2 run that put them ahead. Senior forward Eric Wright, who led the Rams with 16 points, scored seven of the team’s 15 points in that run.

Washington sophomore guard Patrick Blake ended the their momentum when he hit a short jumper to make it 46-44 and a three-pointer with 1:23 to play to give the Generals the lead for good, 47-46. Blake led the Generals’ scoring attack with 13 points, including three three-point baskets.

With the win, Washington advances to the City 4-A semifinals Wednesday night against Dorsey. South Gate, which moved up from 3-A, finished with a 23-4 record.

Banning 47, Lincoln 44--Banning came back from a 14-point second-half deficit by surrendering only two points in the fourth quarter to beat Lincoln in the City 3-A Playoff quarterfinals at Eagle Rock High School.

Lincoln was led by Keith Whitner’s game-high 21 points.

Records: Lincoln 20-5; Banning 15-12

Franklin 71, Jefferson 68--Franklin sophomore Johnny Sanders hit a 12-foot jump shot with 1:58 left to tie the City 3-A quarterfinal game at 68. Junior guard Hao Quach sealed the victory for Franklin when he was fouled on a rebound and sank two free throws. Keith Parris led Jefferson with 20 points.

Records: Jefferson 13-10; Franklin 16-8.

Monroe 62, Garfield 53--Garfield came back from a 13-point third-quarter deficit to take a brief lead, but free-throw shooting enabled the host Vikings to hang on for a City 3-A quarterfinal win.

Monroe’s Tweedy Steiner led all scorers with 18 points, and teammate Jeff Nadeau added 17. Garfield center Alex Gomez also had 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Records: Garfield 16-11; Monroe 22-3.

Verbum Dei 76, Village Christian 67--Verbum Dei, led by junior Andre Miller’s game-high 22 points, used a 14-4 run midway through the third quarter to break open a Southern Section IV-A quarterfinal game at L.A. Baptist High.

Verbum Dei, which led by as many as 18 points late in the game, also got 12 points from Lamont Solomon and 11 from Dion Jackson.

Records: Verbum Dei 21-4; Village Christian 20-5.

Rio Hondo Prep 58, Pilgrim 56--Center Carl Graham sank a 10-foot shot with five seconds remaining to lift the host Kares in a Southern Section V-A quarterfinal playoff game.

Pilgrim forward Victor Dean hit a layup with 1:28 left to tie the score at 56. The lead changed five times in the fourth quarter before Graham hit the winning shot.

Graham scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Dean scored 19 points and guard Gary Hackett added 18 points for Pilgrim.

Records: Pilgrim 15-8; Rio Hondo Prep 15-9.

WEDNESDAY

Crenshaw 115, Van Nuys 49--Top-seeded in the City Section 4-A playoffs, host Crenshaw cruised to victory in a first-round game.

Junior forward Kristaan Johnson led the Cougars with 30 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

Fourteen Crenshaw players got on the scoreboard. Junior forward Tremaine Fowlkes added 21 points, eight rebounds and two steals, junior forward Reggie McFerren had 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot, and sophomore forward Ronnie Arch scored 11. Crenshaw outrebounded the Wolves 36-17.

Records: Van Nuys 8-14; Crenshaw 23-2

Washington 69, Palisades 50--With an aggressive 1-3-1 full-court press and a strong interior game, Washington turned back visiting Palisades in a City 4-A playoff game.

The Generals got off to a slow start and trailed the Dolphins 19-11 at the end of the first quarter. Washington then turned up its defensive intensity and built a 32-25 halftime lead, which they never relinquished.

Dorsey 67, Fairfax 61--Dons’ guard Davey Fortson scored 13 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth period to lead visiting Dorsey in a City 4-A playoff game.

Robert Foster, who scored 17 points, and Lawrence Gardner, who added 16, kept Fairfax in the lead until the end of the third period. Dorsey took the lead for good, 53-48, with a six-point run to open the fourth quarter.

Records: Dorsey 13-10; Fairfax 18-8.

Fremont 70, Manual Arts 59--Tommie Davis scored 21 points and Fremont used clutch free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to hold off host Manual Arts in a City 4-A playoff game.

The Pathfinders made 17 of 23 free throws in the fourth quarter, but Manual Arts cut a 50-39 lead to 63-59 with 52 seconds remaining.

Fremont then made five of six free throws to put the game away. Leslie Bean added 16 points for Fremont, while David Rickenbacker had 18 points for Manual Arts.

Records: Fremont 18-7; Manual Arts 20-7.

Locke 90, Chatsworth 57--Glen Lyles scored 18 points to lead Locke past West Valley League champion Chatsworth in the first round of the City 4-A playoffs.

Records: Locke 23-9; Chatsworth 15-11.

Jefferson 70, Marshall 63--Despite sinking just one field goal in the fourth quarter, Jefferson held off a late surge by Marshall for a first-round City 3-A playoff victory.

Lincoln 56, Bell 52--Ruben Castellanos scored 15 points as Lincoln advanced to the second round of the 3-A City Playoffs by beating the Bell Eagles at East Los Angeles College.

Ricardo Lopez scored 17 points and Ricard Ceja added 16 points for Bell.

Records: Lincoln 20-4; Bell 9-11.

San Fernando 73, Wilson 54--Junior forward Jerome Elliott scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead San Fernando in a first-round game of the City 3-A playoffs.

Records: Wilson 12-13; San Fernando 15-7.

Garfield 55, Birmingham 52--Center Alex Gomez and forward Frank Aguilar combined for 39 points and 16 rebounds to lead Garfield to a first-round City 3-A playoff win.

Gomez led all scorers with 28 points.

Records: Garfield 16-10, Birmingham 16-8.
