OUTLOOK Three quality pitchers and a strong finish in 1992 are reasons for plenty of optimism at Sonora. The Raiders won five of their last 12 games after losing 11 of their opening 13. “I knew we weren’t going to hit well, so I told the kids to go out, play defense and have fun their first year on varsity,” Tellers said. “This year, we look great on paper, but we still have to go out and prove ourselves.” Sonora has won only 11 games in the last three seasons but figures to contend for the league title with a three-man rotation of Lythgoe, Unger and Rodriguez. Lythgoe was 1-3-1 as a junior with a 2.60 earned-run average. He’s a 6-foot-5 right-hander who challenges hitters with an 85 mile-an-hour fastball. Unger, a 6-3 left-hander, was 3-2 last season. His best pitch is a split-finger fastball. “Lythgoe and Unger are capable of throwing no-hitters every time out,” Tellers said. Vorell batted .431 last season.
