Broussely is hoping the Pioneer baseball team will follow the example the football team set last fall. Western’s football team suffered through a miserable 1991 season, only to finish in a three-way tie for the league title with Valencia and Anaheim last fall. Can the baseball team improve on last season’s fifth-place finish? “We improved at the end of last year,” Broussely said. “And that gives us hope for this season.” The Pioneers were particularly tough in the last week of the season, beating league-champion Brea-Olinda, 8-0, and Magnolia, 11-6. The Pioneers return more players than anyone else in the league--five of the six returning players have pitching experience. Art Garcia is particularly tough. “He has a good breaking pitch,” said Savanna Coach Hack Mitchell, a former Western coach.
