No team in the league had a better last half of the season than Savanna did last year. The Rebels won 10 of their final 13 games and reached the semifinals of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs, the school’s best finish in 21 years. “We had some internal problems on the team,” Mitchell said. “But once we took care of it at midseason, we did a 180-degree turnaround.” With four starters returning, Mitchell has reason to be optimistic for this year. Crockwell hit .418 and was an all-league pick at shortstop. DeGadillo hit only .220, but has one of the best throwing arms of any catcher in the North County. Mitchell lists his team as a darkhorse contender behind Valencia, Western and Anaheim. Why? The Rebels’ young pitching staff. They graduated starters Steve Krier and Steve Lindop. Duff, Monzon and sophomore Mike Manley will have to develop quickly. Crockwell also will lend a hand as a reliever. “We don’t have anyone with starting (pitching) experience at the varsity level,” Mitchell said. “We’re very young.” Mitchell says he’ll rotate his staff frequently in each game, giving the starter three innings and having the relievers split the final four innings.
