PREP ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Survives Softball Tournament Opener

Danny Rodriguez singled home Jennifer Allchin with the winning run in the top of the ninth inning to give Fountain Valley a 1-0 victory over Capistrano Valley in the first round of the Laguna Hills softball tournament Monday at Alicia Park.

Rodriguez (5-0) had two hits, pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 for the Barons (6-1), who will play Irvine in the quarterfinals tonight at Alicia Park.

In other tournament games:

Irvine 2, Saugus 0--Alleah Poulson hit a two-run home run for Irvine (4-1).

Foothill 8, Santa Margarita (5, mercy)--Michelle Churnock had two hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored and Christina Mazurie had three runs scored and three RBIs for the Knights (4-3). Amy Tessman pitched a two-hitter and had two hits and two runs scored for Foothill, which will play Rancho Alamitos, a 1-0 winner over El Toro.

Ocean View 3, Woodbridge 1--Lisa Dacquisto, Kathy Ponce, and Alison Murphy each hit RBI singles for Ocean View (5-1). Ponce pitched a three-hitter to earn the victory for the Seahawks, who will play Laguna Hills in the quarterfinals.

Laguna Hills 2, Mission Viejo 0--Misty Thompson had two RBIs and Alicia Stevens had two runs scored for Laguna Hills (4-1).

Marina 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Robyn Yorke had three hits for Marina (2-1), which will play Tustin, a 9-8 winner over San Clemente, in the quarterfinals.

In nonleague softball:

Buena Park 4, Downey Pius X 3--Christine Caro had two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI for host Buena Park (2-2-2).

Edison 10, Santiago 3--Brandy Sullivan pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts to earn the victory in her first varsity start for the Chargers (1-3).

El Dorado 9, Savanna 0--Kelli Tom pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and Nikki Hart had three hits, two stolen bases, two runs scored for host El Dorado (5-2).

Newport Harbor 9, Calvary Chapel 7--Jenny Cloclasure had a double and a home run and pitched a complete game to earn her sixth victory for visiting Newport Harbor (6-1).

In nonleague baseball:

Edison 8, Santa Margarita 1--Steve Blanchard hit a three-run home run, his third of the season, and Robert Caton hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBIs for host Edison (4-2). Tom Barilla allowed five hits and one run and struck out six over five innings to earn the victory.

Esperanza 16-15, Canyon 3-5--Poncho Ruiz had five hits, eight RBIs, five runs scored and two home runs to lead host Esperanza (4-2) to a doubleheader sweep. Casey Wilson hit a two-run home run in the first game for Canyon (5-2).

Estancia 7, Calvary Chapel 4--Pedro Arceyut hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh with the score tied, 4-4, for host Estancia (4-1).

Jairo Arceyut, Pedro’s brother, had three hits, three stolen bases and two RBIs for the Eagles (4-1), and also pitched a hitless seventh inning to earn the victory.

Santa Ana Valley 12-9, Santa Ana 2-1--Rick Crosby hit a grand slam in the first game and had four hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader sweep for host Santa Ana Valley (3-3). Santa Ana is 0-5.

In nonleague golf:

Corona del Mar 382, Marina 401--Paul Ohshima and Brian Rey shot one-under par 34s for Marina (0-1) at Meadowlark in the second half of an 18-hole match. Kevin Walden shot a one-over par 36 to lead Corona del Mar.

Pacifica 191, Savanna 243--Phil Torres shot a one-over-par 36 at Dad Miller for Pacifica (2-0).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Brea-Olinda 13, Fullerton 5--Regi Buenviaje swept at singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 15-0 for host Brea-Olinda (5-0).

Dana Hills 11, Laguna Hills 7--Mike Baxi and Justin Rimel swept at doubles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 for host Dana Hills (3-3). Chris Marshall swept at singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for Laguna Hills.

Foothill 11, La Quinta 7--Nate Griset and Mike Penn swept their doubles sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, for visiting Foothill (4-3).

Garden Grove 17, Tustin 1--Long Nguyen and Derrick Nguyen swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 18-0 this season for visiting Garden Grove (5-1).

Trabuco Hills 14, Saddleback 4--Juro Letko swept at singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 for visiting Trabuco Hills (4-1). Saddleback is 3-3.

University 13, Laguna Beach 5--The Trojans, ranked third in the Southern Section Division II, improved to 3-O. Julian Zajfen swept in singles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 for Laguna Beach (3-2).
