MISSION VIEJO : Site Limits for Adult Businesses Extended

Share

A temporary ordinance that restricts where adult businesses can be located has been extended for 10 months by the City Council.

The ordinance, which was first approved in February and set to expire next month, restricts adult businesses to one area in the city--a section on the east side of Marguerite Parkway, between Avery Parkway and Via Curacion.

The extension was requested by the city staff, which asked for more time to continue developing a more comprehensive ordinance dealing with adult business restrictions.

City officials said restricted businesses would include adult bookstores, cabarets, motels, movie theaters, escort services, massage parlors, sexual encounter establishments and adult arcades.

Some residents in the restricted area have expressed fears over living near a site where adult businesses are allowed. Capistrano Valley High School is about a quarter of a mile from the restricted area.

City officials said there are no adult businesses in Mission Viejo. However, a recent Planning Commission study found that city zoning ordinances might not do enough to address potential problems caused by an adult business opening here, thus sparking the need for the restrictions.
