BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Loyola Loses a Slugfest, 10-5

Monday’s game between Loyola and Crespi turned out to be a makeup game in more ways than one.

The Mission League contest at Shepherd Field was to make up for the March 26 rain-out. This time, the teams combined to score 15 runs and knock out 20 hits, unlike their March 24 matchup in which the two managed only 10 hits in a 1-0 Crespi win.

However, the result this time was the same: Loyola came up on the short end, losing 10-5.

Crespi jumped to a 6-0 lead, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings as Loyola pitcher Mark Carroll struggled with his control. Over the three inning span, Carroll struck out three batters, walked one, threw three pitches in the dirt--one for a passed ball--and gave up eight hits.

Crespi pitcher Keith Evans kept the Cubs quiet for the first couple of innings, holding Loyola hitless while striking out two. However, Loyola erupted in the bottom of the third, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring five runs to shave Crespi’s lead to 6-5.

In the fourth inning, Casey Snow, who singled and stole second, scored on a home run by first baseman Jeff Suppan that easily cleared the center field fence. Crespi went on to score the final four runs of the game.
