Because Clark also plays for the soccer team, it takes him several weeks to get accustomed to the baseball diamond. Last season he had one hit in his first 16 at-bats but finished his first-team All-Garden Grove League season with 30 hits. This season Clark had only two hits in his first six games, but he made up for it last week, with nine hits in 17 at-bats, seven runs batted in and five runs scored in four Kennedy victories. On the mound, he had a victory, 7-1, over Garden Grove, and a save in the Fighting Irish’s 16-7 victory over Savanna. He was three for four with five RBIs against Savanna and was five for six with two RBIs in a 22-4 victory over previously unbeaten Rancho Alamitos. Teammate Jeff Westermann also had an outstanding week, going nine for 14 with seven RBIs and six runs scored. Westermann also had a victory.

Corey Cruz of Canyon shut out previously unbeaten Troy on two hits in a 7-0 Anaheim Lions’ Tournament game and pitched three scoreless innings to earn a victory against Foothill.

Brad Goldston and Paul Nihipali helped Esperanza, ranked second in the county, to a four-game victory over No. 8 Foothill, extending the Aztecs’ league winning streak to 22 matches. Goldston had 26 kills and Nihipali had 23.

Mike McDonald and Andy Castro had a no-hitter and one-hitter, respectively, in South Coast League games for Mater Dei. McDonald struck out 10 and walked one in a 3-0 victory over El Toro. Castro gave up only a double in the fifth in a 4-2 victory over San Clemente.

Chad Peare of Trabuco Hills won the discus at the Trabuco Hills Invitational with a mark of 186 feet 6 inches, the best in the state this season. He finished second in the shot put (58-0).
