VALLEY AREA ROUNDUP : Canyon Draws a Blank in Loss to Crespi

Sam Clemons was one of three Crespi High pitchers who combined to hold Canyon to three hits in a 14-0 nonleague victory on Monday at Canyon Country.
Clemons, a junior right-hander making his second start of the season, earned his first varsity victory. In four innings, he allowed two hits and both runners were erased on double plays. Keith Evans added two scoreless innings and Jorvic Salazar pitched the seventh.
Canyon (8-8) did not have a runner reach second base.
Kyle Carden was one of five Crespi players with two hits. Carden, who missed the first month of the season because he was academically ineligible, came into the game with one hit in 13 at-bats. He had a single, double and a walk and scored three runs in four plate appearances.
Casey Snow, Jeff Suppan, Brad Wright and Gus Jordt also had two hits apiece for the Celts (14-2), who are ranked second in The Times’ area poll. Snow and Suppan each drove in three runs.
Ray Avalos took the loss for the Cowboys. Relievers Pat McDermitt, Rick Harbo and Jason Jennings gave up seven runs in the seventh inning.

In another nonleague baseball game:
Coutin 19, Mesrobian 5--Freshman right-hander Evan Gunny earned the victory in relief and was three for four with his second home run of the season, leading the Knights (5-2) to a nonleague victory.
Gunny and third baseman Mike Scully each had three hits. Mesrobian is 0-5.
GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
Simi Valley 9, Channel Islands 1--Debbie Hatfield was three for four and pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts, leading the Pioneers (17-0, 7-0) to a Marmonte League victory at Simi Valley.
Tracy Hansen was four for four with an RBI and Sara Griffin was three for four with three runs and three RBIs for the Pioneers, who are ranked first in Division I in the Southern Section. Nicole Newhart and Amber Dellamalva had two hits apiece for Simi Valley.
Channel Islands is 0-7 halfway through the league schedule.
Saugus 6, Burroughs 2--Second baseman Kim O’Leary and first baseman Sandy Thate had two hits apiece for the host Centurions (10-5-1, 2-1) in a Foothill League game. Adria Lombardi picked up the victory for Saugus.
St. Monica 4, Harvard-Westlake 3 (eight innings)--The Wolverines’ Lindsay Sloane pitched a complete game, striking out nine and walking none, but lost when host St. Monica scored with one out in the in eighth inning of a nonleague game. Harvard-Westlake is 5-4.
Sylmar 15, North Hollywood 4--Traci Hanna was two for four with a home run and three RBIs, leading the Spartans (12-4, 4-0) to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory.
First baseman Nina Abundes was three for four with three RBIs. North Hollywood is 2-7, 1-3.
Canoga Park 11, Poly 6--Anna Gonzalez had two hits and Theresa Villa struck out six for the Hunters (6-2, 2-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Granada Hills d. Reseda, 15-2, 15-9, 13-15, 15-0--Mike DiSimone had 19 kills, leading the Highlanders to a Northwest Valley Conference victory.
Granada Hills (10-0, 7-0), which holds first place in the conference, will play host to Cleveland on Wednesday for the conference championship.
Sylmar d. North Hollywood, 15-12, 8-15, 15-13, 15-6--Sam Mishhoud had 12 kills and 10 blocks, leading the Spartans to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at North Hollywood.
Jaime Covarrubias had 25 assists and Edward Terry added 17 kills for Sylmar (4-6, 3-4). Zachary Ambrose led North Hollywood (2-8, 1-6) with 12 kills.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
Van Nuys 56, North Hollywood 34--The Wolves (6-0, 5-0) clinched their first East Valley League title in 10 years.
BOYS’ GOLF
Santa Clara 390, Channel Islands 507--Junior Karson Chavez eagled the sixth hole, a 461-yard par five, at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard on his way to a four-over-par 76, winning medalist honors in a nonleague match.
