ROUNDUP : Camarillo Stuns Mistake-Prone Simi Valley, 2-0

The Camarillo High softball team pulled off what might rank as the upset of the season Thursday when it defeated visiting Simi Valley, 2-0, in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Simi Valley (17-1, 8-1 in league play) entered the game ranked first in Southern Section Division I and the state, but the Pioneers committed four errors, including two in the first inning that led to Camarillo’s runs.

Senior right-hander Laura Richardson (9-2) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts. Richardson has not been scored on in 54 innings.

Simi Valley senior Sara Griffin (13-1), who entered the game with a streak of 91 scoreless innings, was charged with the loss.

In other girls’ softball games:

Hoover 15, Muir 0--Nancy Evans pitched three hitless innings as host Hoover (17-0-1, 3-0 in Pacific League play) routed Muir in a league game. Evans (17-0) struck out eight before yielding to freshman Tina Kinney, who mopped up in the six-inning game.

Crescenta Valley 19, Pasadena 0--Elizabeth Barnes hit two home runs in the Pacific League game.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Simi Valley 13, Westlake 0--Aaron Whitley hit a two-run home run and Bill Scheffels (8-0) pitched five innings to earn the victory as host Simi Valley (18-2) improved to 8-0 in Marmonte League play.

Poly 11, North Hollywood 2--Poly banged out 15 hits in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home. Francisco Dorame was four for four and had four runs batted in.

Van Nuys 5, Birmingham 2--Jesus Bolivar scattered six hits and struck out 10 for host Van Nuys (7-11, 4-6).

Sylmar 8, Grant 0--Carlos Velazco pitched to only three batters over the minimum in a three-hitter.

Monroe 20, Canoga Park 6--Jorge Dorado (three hits, two RBIs), Juan Navarro (two hits, three RBIs, four runs), John Shellabarger (two hits, three RBIs), and Ed Rojo (three RBIs) led visiting Monroe (12-3, 9-1) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Kennedy 11, Granada Hills 1--Johnny Toven had a triple and a solo home run, and Tommy Manning pitched a four-hitter for host Kennedy (17-2, 8-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Taft 5, Reseda 4--John Soto slugged a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to put Taft (15-4, 6-4) ahead for the first time, and Brandon Witkow (7-0) made it stand up, tossing a four-hitter and striking out seven in the West Valley League game.

San Fernando 8, Cleveland 5--San Fernando rallied for five runs in the sixth to pull out the North Valley League win. Tony Cabrera (two hits, two RBIs) drove in two runs with a double in the inning.

Burroughs 8, Canyon 7--Gary Johnson squeezed home Karl Castro with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Burroughs (10-8, 4-1 in Foothill League play) handed Canyon (8-9, 4-1) its first league defeat.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale 10, Canyons 9--The Vaqueros (1-13 in Western State Conference play) got the go-ahead run in the ninth when Billy Ramirez singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on Keith McCulloch’s single and scored when Kirk Fellows’ relay throw forced Canyons catcher Chris Pfatenhauer up the first-base line, leaving home plate unattended.

Fellows had four hits and three RBIs for Canyons.

Bakersfield 2, Ventura 1--The Pirates stranded 11 baserunners in a WSC loss at home.

Moorpark 7, Valley 4--Josh Zamarippa pitched a six-hitter to lead host Moorpark to a WSC win.

Mission 4, East L.A. 2--Josh Brown (10-2) pitched his seventh complete game, allowing five hits.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Rio Mesa 110, Buena 57, Dos Pueblos 20--Sophomore Andrea Wasden (200 meters, 110 hurdles) and senior Gennie Van Scoy (shotput, discus) each won two events for the Rio Mesa girls’ team in the Channel League meet at Santa Barbara City College. Rio Mesa (9-0, 7-0) won its eighth consecutive league title.
