ROUNDUP : Sylmar Routs North Hollywood Behind Velazco’s Gem

Carlos Velazco pitched a one-hitter, struck out eight and walked two as visiting Sylmar High defeated North Hollywood, 9-0, Thursday in an East Valley League baseball game.

Velazco (7-1), a junior right-hander, had a no-hitter through six innings, but Bobby Talamantes’ infield single to open the seventh ended it.

Catcher Shane Rankin was four for four with a double and a run batted in for Sylmar (14-7, 10-2).

In other baseball games:

El Camino Real 12, Reseda 0--Randy Wolf, Justin Balser and John Novak homered and Kevin Szymanski pitched a seven-hitter as the Conquistadores (16-1, 12-0) won their 13th consecutive game. Wolf was three for four with four RBIs and Balser also drove in four runs.

Saugus 10, Hart 5--Brandon Hernandez was two for three with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the fifth, to lead host Saugus (12-9, 2-6) to a Foothill League victory. Bobby Cowan (3-6) relieved Hernandez in the third and struck out seven over five innings to earn the win.

Birmingham 8, Canoga Park 3--The Braves scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to break open a Mid-Valley League game at Canoga Park. Steve Brown and Jimmy Uline each were three for four and scored twice for Birmingham (3-10-2, 1-11).

San Fernando 9, Granada Hills 6--Javier Lujan was three for four and Javier Lozano was two for four to lead visiting San Fernando (8-1-1, 6-6) in a North Valley League game.

Monroe 1, Van Nuys 0--Robert Ballester (six strikeouts, two walks) got the better of a pitcher’s duel against Jesus Bolivar (four strikeouts, two walks). The run allowed by Bolivar in the second inning was unearned.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale 10, Oxnard 4--Glendale extended a 5-2 seventh-inning lead when Joe Robles hit a grand slam after the Condors intentionally walked the previous batter to set up a potential double play.

Mike Moreno was three for five with three RBIs and right-hander Mike McMullen pitched into the ninth for the victory in the Western State Conference game.

Valley 9, Ventura 6--Jamie Zeichick was two for four, scored twice and drove in three runs for the Monarchs in a WSC game at Ventura. Zeichick had a two-run single and Steve Knez doubled home a third run during a four-run seventh for Valley (20-13, 19-8).

Santa Barbara 8, Canyons 7--The Cougars rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth but potential tying run Chris Pfatenhauer was stranded at second when Andy Shaw, the WSC’s RBI leader, struck out swinging to end the game.

BOYS’ TRACK

Hart 96, Burroughs 41--Ari Swierk and Jason Medearis each won two events for Hart in the Foothill League meet at Burroughs.

Swierk spanned a personal best of 21 feet 10 inches in the long jump and bounded 42-0 1/4 in the triple jump for the Indians (5-0, 4-0), who clinched their fifth consecutive league title.

Loyola 78, Notre Dame 49--Kurt Wolff won the 100 meters in 11.4 and the long jump with a personal best of 21-7 1/2, but Notre Dame lacked the depth to overcome host Loyola in the Mission League meet. The win clinched the league title for Loyola (8-0, 7-0).

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 1, Westlake 0--Sara Griffin (19-1, 9-1) had 14 strikeouts and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth of the Marmonte League game.

Camarillo 1, Thousand Oaks 0 (10 innings)--The Scorpions loaded the bases on three consecutive singles in the bottom of the 10th, then Sarah DeWoody scored on a wild pitch to lift Camarillo (14-4, 8-2) to a Marmonte League victory over visiting Thousand Oaks.

Senior right-hander Laura Richardson (11-2), who extended her scoreless streak to 72 innings, threw a four-hitter with 17 strikeouts.

Chatsworth 10, Reseda 4--Pinch-hitter Rachel Paniccia hit a three-run homer during a seven-run fourth inning in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.
