Three Anaheim men aboard a 40-foot commercial fishing boat found themselves aboard a vessel four feet shorter Friday after an early morning collision with a larger ship sheared off part of the boat’s bow section. The men, identified as James Rose, 26, Daryn Smith, 26, and Lonni Barner, 21, were not injured.

The incident occurred about 3 a.m. Friday, seven miles west of Point Vicente, a Coast Guard spokesperson said. The crewmen of the fishing boat, the Orca out of San Pedro, were rescued after the collision.

The name of the ship that collided with the Orca was not known, but the Coast Guard recalled to port a cargo vessel that was outbound from Long Beach and was in the area where the collision occurred. Officials declined to identify the cargo vessel. Frank Rose, the Orca’s owner, said he was told by one of the boat crew members that the Orca was struck by an oil tanker. Two Coast Guard vessels towed the Orca to a Wilmington boat repair yard.
