Damon Berryhill’s game-winning home run came one inning too late to get a victory for Greg Maddux.

Berryhill’s homer in the bottom of the 11th Friday night gave the Atlanta Braves a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta, ending the Braves’ five-game losing streak--their longest in nearly two years.

It came an inning after Maddux, a friend of Berryhill’s from their days on the Cubs, left the game.

Berryhill hit it with one out against Rob Murphy (1-1). Mike Stanton (1-1) got the victory with a scoreless 11th inning.

Gregg Jefferies hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, with one out in the ninth inning against Maddux to tie the score, 2-2.

Until then, Maddux had retired 24 of 25 batters. He gave up five hits, striking out eight and walking none.

San Francisco 5, Montreal 2--Matt Williams hit his NL-leading eighth home run at San Francisco, leading the Giants over the Expos.

Williams homered off Chris Nabholz in the third, driving the ball into the same spot in the left-field bleachers where he hit one Thursday.

Bill Swift (2-1) limited the Expos to one hit through five innings before giving up a solo homer to John Vander Wal in the sixth. Swift gave up four hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out five.

The Giants knocked out Nabholz (1-2), who lost to San Francisco for the second consecutive time, after 2 2/3 innings. He gave up four runs on six hits, walking two and striking out two.

San Diego 7, New York 6--Tony Gwynn had his fifth five-hit game of his career and drove in three runs, including the go-ahead RBI in the eighth inning at San Diego, as the Padres beat the Mets.

Anthony Young (0-3) retired the first two batters before walking Darrell Sherman. Rookie Ricky Gutierrez followed with his fourth hit of the game to send the runner to third, and Gwynn then beat out an infield single to deep second. It was Gwynn’s second five-hit game this season, raising his average to .295.

Young extended his losing streak to 17 games, the longest in baseball since Seattle’s Mike Parrott dropped 18 in a row in 1980-81.

Rich Rodriguez (1-0) got the victory with one shaky inning and Gene Harris pitched the ninth for his fifth save. The game ended when the third strike got away from the catcher, but Bobby Bonilla stood at home plate thinking it was called a ball.

Houston 11, Pittsburgh 2--Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and Eddie Taubensee added a two-run homer in the seventh to break open a close game at Houston.

Mark Portugal (2-2) went 6 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits.

The Astros wasted no time getting to Bob Walk (2-2) as leadoff hitter Craig Biggio doubled in the first inning and scored two outs later on Eric Anthony’s single.

Colorado 6, Florida 2--Andres Galarraga hit a three-run home run and Armando Reynoso pitched a six-hitter in his first game with the Rockies to help them beat their expansion rival at Miami.

Reynoso (1-0) struck out four, walked two and gave up one run in pitching his first complete game in seven career starts.

Galarraga hit his fourth home run of the year in a four-run first inning against Ryan Bowen (2-2). Galarraga added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, which moved him into the lead in runs batted in with 25, one more than Barry Bonds.

Chicago 7, Cincinnati 3--Mark Grace drove in three runs as the Cubs ended a three-game losing streak at Cincinnati.

Heathcliff Slocumb (1-0) took over for starter Frank Castillo in the third and got the win. Tim Belcher (1-3) started for the Reds and got the loss.
