Don Chaney will be named coach of the Detroit Pistons today, according to a newspaper report.

Chaney would replace Ron Rothstein, the Detroit Free Press said, citing a team source that the newspaper did not name.

Rothstein was fired last week after the Pistons finished 40-42 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Chaney, 47, was one of Rothstein’s assistants. He has twice been a head coach in the NBA, with the Clippers from 1985-1987 and with the Houston Rockets from 1988-1992. He was named coach of the year in 1990-91 after leading the Rockets to a 52-30 record.

Chaney was fired after the Rockets fell to a .500 record after 52 games the season after the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

“If he does get the job, it’s where he belongs,” Piston center Olden Polynice told the Free Press.

Team President Tom Wilson told the Free Press that terms of a contract were being negotiated.

“Nothing is firm yet,” Wilson said.

The newspaper was unable to reach Chaney for comment.
