A 52-year-old man was shot and wounded in the driveway of his home, but several other people escaped injury in four unrelated shootings, police said Monday.

The string of attacks, occurring in a period from about 10 p.m. Sunday until about 6:15 a.m. Monday, were “just coincidence,” Police Lt. Mike Schliskey said. “It just all came together. Everybody decided to get their guns out for some reason.”

The first attack occurred in the 9400 block of Oasis Avenue when Tru V. Tran got out of his car in his driveway. A gunman fired five shots from a handgun, hitting Tran once in the back, police said. The gunman fled on foot, and police said they did not know why Tran was shot.

Tran, who underwent surgery to remove the bullet, was in guarded condition Monday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a hospital spokeswoman said.

About 11:10 p.m. Sunday, a gunman fired about 15 times at the home of Mai T. Dinh, 37, in the 14200 block of Chestnut Street. It was not clear why anyone was shooting at the house. No one was injured.

About two hours later, Emit D. Bottoms, 27, of Garden Grove, was in his car in the 8200 block of 19th Street when a gunman fired at him, hitting the car once. Police said they thought the shooting might be the result of an earlier argument, but no one has been arrested.

The last incident occurred in the northbound lanes of the San Diego Freeway between Golden West Street and Westminster Boulevard, police said. A driver saw two men in a pickup truck behind him waving a gun, police said. When the unidentified driver started to accelerate one of the men reportedly shot at him, police said.

The driver exited on Westminster Boulevard and called police. The man’s car was not hit and officers did not find any other evidence of a shooting.
