Andre Dawson, troubled by knee problems for much of his career, has cartilage damage in his right knee and faces the possibility of arthroscopic surgery that could sideline him about a month.

Arthur Pappas, the Boston Red Sox physician, said he is awaiting results of an old test to compare with a test taken last Thursday to determine if the damage is new.

Milwaukee’s Teddy Higuera made his first start on a 30-day minor league rehabilitation assignment, giving up one earned run and four hits in four innings as his New Orleans Zephyrs lost to the Omaha Racers, 7-5.
