The Crescenta Valley boys and Hoover girls swim teams are favored to win team titles at the Pacific League championship meet that concludes today at Arcadia.

The Crescenta Valley boys finished the regular season with a an 11-0 record. The Falcons are led by John Jenkins in the 50- and 100-year freestyle and Troy Nickell in the backstroke. Nickell, an All-Southern Section water polo player, set a school record in the 100-yard backstroke last week, clocking 55.95 seconds to eclipse the mark of 56.05 set by Matt Hermans in 1979.

The Hoover girls also were undefeated in Pacific League dual meets. The Tornadoes are led by Cori Sue Miller, one of the most versatile swimmers in the Southern Section.

Marshall High opened the City Section boys volleyball tournament as the top-seeded team in the 3-A Division after finishing the regular season 13-0.

Marshall defeated Grant, 15-2, 15-3, 15-6, in a first- round game Tuesday.

In other first-round games, sixth-seeded Eagle Rock defeated Sylmar, 15-4, 15-6, 15-9. Franklin, an at-large entry, lost to Monroe, 16-14, 14-16, 15-11, 17-15.

Melissa Lord of La Canada, The Times’ Glendale player of the year, scored 21 points to lead a Glendale-area all-star team to a 71-65 overtime victory against a Burbank-area all-star team last weekend.

Denise Gutierrez of Flintridge Sacred Heart scored 12 points for Glendale. Nancy Evans of Hoover added 11 and Maria Fulay of Marshall had seven. Keri Petersen of Crescenta Valley and Monika Nagy of Glendale each scored six, and Tracy Daniels of Hoover, Michelle Boreham of Crescenta Valley, Michelle Turner of Flintridge Sacred Heart and Heather Ford of La Canada each scored two.

Burbank defeated Glendale, 127-123, in the boy’s all-star game. Eddie Powell of Verdugo Hills scored a game-high 28 points. Chad Reese of Hoover scored 19 points. Hai Tran of Glendale added 17 and Glenn Granz of Crescenta Valley added 14.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Ten women and five men from Glendale College will compete in the Southern California track and field prelims Saturday at Cerritos College.

The 15 athletes qualified with their performances last week at the Western State Conference championships at College of the Canyons.

America Rivas qualified in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000-meter events. Other women qualifiers include Alison Oliver (javelin), Nancy Harris (shotput and discus), Nina Monette (200), Nancy McCaul (400), Margarita Renteria (800, 1,500 and 3,000), Makela Theriault (high jump) and Tina Santana (5,000). Silva Vartoomian, Suzanne Szarka and Monette and McCaul qualified in the 1,600 relay.

Robert Nelson won WSC championships in the steeplechase, 10,000 and 5,000. Other men’s qualifiers include Luis Jacobo (steeplechase and 10,000), Gilbert Roca (5,000), Erwin Khachikian (1,500) and Carlos Guerra (javelin).

The Glendale College baseball team concludes its regular season this week with a home game today against Bakersfield and a road game Saturday at Ventura.

The Vaqueros entered the week 18-17 and 13-14 in the Western State Conference after victories over Oxnard and Moorpark.

Glendale defeated Moorpark, 4-3, on a run-scoring single by pinch-hitter J.D. Dew in the bottom of the ninth inning. John Nall gave up 10 hits in 7 2/3 innings for the victory.

Registration is open for Vaquero basketball camps run by Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin that will take place June 28-July 2 and Aug. 2-6.

The camps are open to boys and girls 8 and older.

COLLEGES

Five Occidental College athletes won individual conference titles last weekend during the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference track and field championship meet.

Becky Kopchick won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter events, and Mardecia Martin won the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles as Occidental’s women finished second behind Pomona-Pitzer.

Konstantine Kinderich won the 1,500, Jose Garcia won the 5,000, and Gunnar Miller won the pole vault for the Tiger men, who placed fourth. Claremont won the men’s competition.

Kopchick, Kinderich, Garcia and Miller have qualified for the NCAA Division II track and field championships May 26-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

The 1993 Occidental Invitational track meet will take place Saturday at Eagle Rock.

Olympians Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Gail Devers and Steve Lewis are among the world-class participants who will compete. Field events begin at 4 p.m., and running events at 6.

The Occidental baseball team concluded its season 14-18-2 and 8-13 in the SCIAC after losing three games to conference-champion Cal Lutheran last weekend.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Danielle Robertshaw, Crescenta Valley--Robertshaw, a pitcher, improved her record to 14-1 in a 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten Hoover in a Pacific League softball showdown.

Robertshaw’s performance helped the Falcons improve to 15-1 and 5-0 in the Pacific League.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Robert Nelson, Glendale--Nelson, a sophomore, won three events at the Western State Conference track and field finals, including the steeplechase, 10,000 and 5,000.

Nelson won the steeplechase in 9 minutes 27.9 seconds. He won the 10,000 in 33:24.8 and the 5,000 in 15.44.7.

MISCELLANY

A golf tournament sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce in La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose-Verdugo City and Crescenta Valley will be played May 24 at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club.
