San Clemente High teacher Kurt Westling has been named athletic director at Aliso Niguel High School, which will open this fall.

Westling, 35, is a mathematics teacher at San Clemente and a coach at Capistrano Valley. He worked with the receivers on the football team and headed junior varsity girls’ basketball and softball teams.

“I really wanted input into the staffing of the new school to make sure Aliso Niguel has a top-notch coaching and teaching staff--guys who can win, but also guys who can work together and make all the sports successful here,” Westling said. “From all the people that have applied, I’m sure that we will get a top-notch coaching staff.”

Westling was named athletic director Friday by Aliso Niguel’s principal, Dr. Denise Danne.

Westling said he will be an assistant varsity football coach for the Wolverines and also will coach a lower-level girls’ sport, either basketball or softball, “because I want to keep in tune with what’s going on on both sides.”
