Bridgete Williams, a 5-foot-6 guard who led Harbor College’s basketball team to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, has signed a letter of intent to play at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., in the fall.

Williams, a Morningside High grad, said she also visited Cal State Long Beach, but preferred the atmosphere at Northwestern.

“It was nice and quiet and the people were real nice,” she said. “I think they’ll really appreciate me there.”

As a sophomore last season, Williams ranked second in the state in scoring (38.3 points a game) behind Contra Costa College’s Karleen Shields (41.9).

Williams scored a state-record 72 points in a Feb. 10 game against Long Beach City College. She was named to the All-South Coast Conference and All-California Community College teams. She led the Seahawks (28-4) to the SCC title.

Harbor lost to eventual state champion Lassen College in a quarterfinal game of the state tournament at Ventura College.

“At Northwestern, they play up-tempo like we did at Harbor,” Williams said. “They run a lot and that’s what I like.”

Northwestern, with an enrollment of about 7,000, competes in the NCAA Division I Southland Conference. Last season the Demons were 24-8 and won the National Invitation Tournament.

“Life there will slow me down because there’s not much to do,” she said. “I’ll really concentrate on my work.”
