A homeowner shot and wounded a suspected burglar who broke into his home Monday morning and confronted him, police said.

Another suspect was arrested a short time later on the street. The homeowner, whom police declined to identify, was unhurt, Lt. Mike Schliskey said.

The incident began when the homeowner called police about 10:45 a.m. and said at least two burglars were trying to break into the front and rear of his home in the 8700 block of McFadden Avenue, Schliskey said.

The homeowner later told police that one man got inside the house and appeared to have something in his hand. The homeowner said he fired one shot from a semiautomatic handgun and hit the suspect in the stomach.

When police arrived, they found the wounded suspect in the back yard and the other suspect walking away from the house, Schliskey said.

“The officers got there in a matter of seconds. One officer even heard the shot,” Schliskey said.

Nothing was taken from the home, and police did not find a gun on either suspect, Schliskey said.

The wounded suspect was identified as Martin Andrade, 23. He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was reported in critical condition but expected to survive.

The other suspect was identified as Saul Arriaga Arguello, 25. He was expected to be booked into Orange County Jail.

Schliskey said police were initially told the suspects were from Santa Ana but later could not confirm their place of residence.
