A $51-million renovation of one of Southern California’s busiest intersections--the Corona (71) and the Pomona (60) freeways--has begun and a new four-level interchange with bridges and road improvements is expected to be finished in stages over the next six years.

State transportation officials said the project is vital to relieve congestion at the interchange in southeastern Pomona, where an average of 200,000 vehicles pass through each day.

Construction on the project began last month and ground breaking was Friday. The work, in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, includes construction of the four-level interchange with 11.5 miles of freeway and 14 bridges.
