The Marshall High boys’ tennis team won its third consecutive City Section 3-A Division championship Monday with an 18 1/2-11 victory over Van Nuys at the The Racquet Center in Studio City.

Senior Arthur Tombakian, who has lost only two sets in two years, went unbeaten in the final. Sebastian Albelais and Thomas Chun, the No. 2 and 3 singles players, respectively, also played well for the Barristers.

Marshall, under Coach Fred Scott, finished 16-0.

Margarito Casillas of Hoover won the Division I boys’ 3,200-meter event at the Southern Section championships Saturday at Cerritos College.

Casillas, a senior who won the state cross-country championship last fall, won the 3,200 in 9 minutes 6.92 seconds. He finished second in the 1,600 in 4:15.63. Casillas qualified in both events for Friday’s Masters meet at Cerritos.

Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley, the defending Southern Section champion in the shotput, placed fifth with a put of 42 feet 1/4 inch to qualify for the Masters Meet. Crescenta Valley high jumper Martin Hilke also qualified for the Masters Meet with a mark of 6-7, which placed him second in Division I.

Tennis player Rae Cho of Glendale will compete in the boys’ Southern Section round of 16 Friday at Huntington Beach.

Cho defeated Bruce Seki of Hacienda Heights Wilson, 6-1, 7-5, and Scott Terry of Diamond Bar, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16.

The Glendale Academy boys’ volleyball team saw a successful season come to an end with a three-game quarterfinal loss to Santa Ynez in the Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Chirag Desai had 19 kills for the Cougars, who finished 11-5.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Robert Nelson of Glendale College finished second in the state in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes 3.8 seconds on Saturday at Shasta College in Redding.

Carlos Guerra of Glendale finished 12th in the javelin.

America Rivas placed ninth in the women’s 5,000 with a time of 18:42. Alison Oliver finished ninth in the javelin with a throw of 111-6.

Catcher Lance Evans and infielder Mickey Moreno of Glendale were named first-team All-Western State Conference by league coaches.

Evans, who attended Glendale High, was second in the conference with six home runs. The Vaqueros finished 18-20 and 13-17 in the WSC.

Moreno, a Hoover High graduate, batted .443 and led the conference with 19 doubles.

Outfielder Robert Mancilla, who stole 26 bases, was named to the second team.

COLLEGES

Four Occidental athletes are competing this week at the NCAA Division III track and field championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

Junior Becky Kopchick will compete in the women’s 1,500 and 3,000.

Junior Gunnar Miller will compete in the men’s pole vault. Seniors Konstatine Kinderich and Jose Garcia will compete in the 1,500 and 10,000, respectively.

Three men and three women have been selected as finalists for the Occidental Senior Scholar-Athlete awards, which will be presented June 11.

The men’s finalists include Phil Engebretsen (basketball), Marc Krock (football) and Gary Little (football and track).

Women’s finalists include Claire Bradley (swimming), Stephanie Francis (basketball and softball) and Sarah Wald-Hopkins (swimming).

Criteria for the awards includes a minimum grade-point average of 3.2, participation in intercollegiate athletics and written recommendations from faculty and athletic department representatives.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Arthur Tombakian, Marshall--Tombakian, a senior, led the Barristers to their third consecutive City 3-A tennis championship with his performance Monday in the final against Van Nuys.

Tombakian, who has not lost a set in two years, led Marshall to a 16-0 record this season.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

J.P. Roberge, USC--Roberge, a former standout at St. Francis High, helped USC to victories over Wake Forest, North Carolina State and North Carolina during a baseball tournament in North Carolina last week.

Roberge is an outfielder for the Trojans, who are participating in the NCAA regionals at Austin, Tex.

The city of Glendale is offering tennis instruction for adults and youths beginning June 28. The eight-week program includes 50-minute classes. Registration begins June 1.
