Steelers Ask Waivers on Quarterback Brister

From Staff and Wire Reports

Bubby Brister, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback from 1988-91, was put on waivers by the team Friday.

Brister, 30, started 57 of the 61 games he played during the last seven seasons.

He lost his starting job to Neil O’Donnell in training camp last year, then started four games, including the final three in the regular season, when O’Donnell was hurt.

But the Steelers made it clear that Brister wasn’t in their plans when they prevented O’Donnell from leaving for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by matching the Buccaneers’ $8.2-million, three-year offer, then signed Mike Tomczak to back up O’Donnell for $850,000.
