Cornerman in Wrong Place Against Toney

James Toney punched both Glenn Thomas and one of his cornermen in winning a unanimous 10-round decision at Las Vegas.

Toney, the International Boxing Federation super-middleweight champion, not only hit Thomas often, he also hit one of his handlers who jumped in front of him as the eighth round ended in Thomas’ corner.

“One of his guys got in my face, so I just punched him,” said Toney, whose right hand did no serious damager to cornerman Kevin Henry.

Tony is 37-0-2, and Thomas is 24-2.

Cycling

Claudio Chiappucci went through hail, driving rain and five grueling Alpine passes, then summoned enough energy for a last-minute spurt to victory in the 155-mile 14th stage of the Tour of Italy.

The Italian outsprinted Miguel Indurain, who nonetheless grabbed the leader’s pink jersey when Italian Bruno Leali finished eight minutes behind the leading pack.

Rookie Lance Armstrong earned a $1 million bonus when he took command in the final lap and won the U.S. Pro Cycling Championship in Philadelphia.

Armstrong had put himself in position for the bonus by winning recent races in Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

College Football

Coaches made a strong push for five years of players’ eligibility within a five-year period at the conclusion of the Coaches Football Assn. annual meetings at Dallas.

Faculty representatives opposed the plan.

Under current NCAA rules, a redshirt can’t play in a game or he loses a year of eligibility.

Another item that passed was a recommendation that the CFA appoint a committee to study the bowl structure and the possibility of a Division I-A football playoff.

Basketball

Three former Yugoslavia states--Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina--qualified for the European Basketball Championships.

Estonia also made the cut. The last of the five teams to qualify for the championships June 22 in Germany will be decided in a game today between Latvia and Ukraine.

To get to the tournament, the Bosnian team had to dodge sniper bullets at the Sarajevo airport. Three people crossing with the team were shot dead.

Bosnia Coach Mirza Delebasic said his team in Sarajevo had not played a single game, or even seen a ball, for more than a year since war broke out in April, 1992.

Tennis

Defending champion David Wheaton came from a break and 3-2 down in the final set to beat Britain’s Chris Bailey, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), and retain his Beckenham grass-court tennis title.
