Two teen-age brothers who were working on a car were stabbed Monday by a group of suspected gang members, police said.

Police said they did not know the motive behind the 1:40 p.m. stabbing of the Fullerton brothers, ages 17 and 19.

The victims, whose names were being withheld by police, were in critical condition with multiple stab wounds at UCI Medical Center in Orange, authorities said.

Two Placentia juveniles were arrested a short time after the assault and booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder. Their names were not being released because of their ages, which are 17 and 16.

According to Police Lt. Rex Strickland, the brothers were repeatedly stabbed by an unknown group of suspected gang members. The boys were apparently repairing a car in the 3100 block of Garnet Lane at the time of the attack.

Witnesses told police that they saw the assailants flash gang signals and then flee after the assault.

The brothers, who are not believed to be gang members, are expected to survive their stab wounds, Strickland said.
