Simi Valley High finally ended its search for a football coach, selecting Roger McCamy, a former Simi Valley assistant, to succeed Stan Quina.

McCamy, 49, a teacher at Simi Valley and a 19-year employee of the Simi Valley Unified School District, served as a varsity assistant to Simi Valley Coach Dave Murphy from 1985 to 1989.

McCamy also served as an assistant at Cal Lutheran in 1977 and three years (1978-80) as head sophomore coach at Royal High, leading the team to a Marmonte League championship his final season.

McCamy’s hiring comes two weeks after Southern Section schools were permitted to begin conducting spring practices. McCamy’s first task is to get caught up.

“There are numerous things to do,” McCamy said. “Equipment, inventory and getting a staff (of assistants) together. (Monday), I met the kids for the first time and they were a great group. I’m sure everyone’s got some anxiety, but they’ve got a great attitude and they’re a super bunch.”

Quina, who led the Pioneers to two consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in school history, was dismissed last month after he refused to commit to coaching the Pioneers in the fall.

Quina openly campaigned for several coaching jobs after his request for a full-time teaching position at Simi Valley was denied. Quina has since accepted an assistant position at Ventura College.

Simi Valley was 7-5 last season, finishing third in the Marmonte League at 4-3.

The Pioneers lost to Hawthorne, 18-14, in the Southern Section Division II quarterfinals.
