Trio Advances in State Amateur

A trio of area players survived the 36-hole cut Tuesday and advanced to the match play portion of the State Amateur men’s golf tournament at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula.

Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks, Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys and Corby Segal of Burbank made the 32-man match-play field.

Steinberg, a veteran amateur who has won the Southern California Golf Assn. championship three times, finished at 146, three shots behind leaders Casey Boyns of Pacific Grove and Kevin Riley of El Cajon.

Boyns, a caddy at Pebble Beach and the 1989 state champion, won medalist honors on the first playoff hole after Riley hit his tee shot out-of-bounds.

Steinberg shot par 72 at Pebble Beach in the second round Tuesday, the third-best score of the afternoon. Steinberg will play Steve Peterman of Cupertino in the first round of match play today at 6:54 a.m.

Wi, who won the event in 1990, finished at 153 after a 76 at Pebble Beach on Tuesday. Wi will face Victor Zayas Jr. of San Diego today at 6:42.

Segal, who played at Cal State Northridge, finished at 148 after a second-round 74 at Spyglass Hill. Segal will face James Skinner of Berkeley today at 7:24.

Today’s first-round winners will play another match in the afternoon. Second-round play will begin at 11:54 a.m. The remainder of the tournament will be played at Pebble Beach, with the 36-hole final scheduled for Friday.

Four area players missed the cut.

Yukinori Miyashita of Simi Valley stumbled to an 82 Tuesday at Pebble Beach to finish at 156. Miyashita missed a chance to make the field in a sudden-death playoff. Five players who tied at 155 made the playoff, with two advancing.

David Saylor of West Hills, who was in solid position after a first-round 76 at Pebble Beach, skied to an 89 at Spyglass Hill and missed the cut.

Buena High senior Chad Wright of Ventura shot a second-round 78 at Spyglass Hill to finish at 159. Wright’s older brother Justin shot 81 at Pebble Beach and finished at 167.
