NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Arcadia, Muir Runners Win Individual Titles

Asha Jayasinghe of Arcadia High and Kenny Haslip of Muir won individual championships at the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championships last week at Cerritos College.

Jayasinghe, a senior, won the girls’ 400 meters in 55.45 seconds. Jayasinghe finished fourth last year.

Haslip, a junior, won the boys’ 300 intermediate hurdles in 37.80 seconds. Haslip finished third last year.

Gerald Stamps of Muir finished second in the 110 hurdles in 14.23. Nathan Woods of Duarte finished sixth in the 800 in 1 minute 58.28 seconds.

The Pasadena Poly girls’ soccer team and the Muir football team won team championships at the L.A. Watts Summer Games last weekend.

Pasadena Poly defeated Arcadia, 2-0. Blanca Formm of Pasadena Poly was named most valuable player of the tournament.

Jeremy Bondwell of Muir was named MVP of the football tournament after leading the Mustangs to a 24-18 overtime victory over Dominguez.

Diamond Bar finished second in girls’ basketball, losing to Lynwood, 53-34, in the championship game. Chatsworth defeated Arcadia, 16-14, to win the boys’ volleyball title.

Cal Poly Pomona has dropped its women’s softball program because of budget cuts in the California State University system.

Softball was Pomona’s only Division I sport. The Broncos advanced to the College World Series in 1984, ‘85, ’88 and ’89 and compiled a 644-348-8 record in 19 years of competition.

Pomona was 18-27 last season.

Erin Martin of Temple City High and Erin Donovan of South Pasadena have received $1,000 scholarships for demonstrating outstanding effort on the soccer field and classroom.

Martin, the national all-time leader in scoring with 388 goals, is a member of the under-20 national team and will attend Stanford in the fall.

Donovan, an All-Southern Section player, will attend Georgetown or Boston University in the fall.

Christy Tucker of Charter Oak was named Southern Section co-most valuable player for Division II softball.

Tucker, a pitcher who led Charter Oak to the Southern Section championship, shared MVP honors with Nancy Evans of Hoover.

Tucker was joined on the Division II team by several San Gabriel Valley-area players, including pitcher Natale Kirkbride of Bishop Amat, outfielder Jody Stiles (Wilson) and infielders Dawn Castaneda (Bishop Amat), Laurie Grey (Charter Oak), Erin Massey (Wilson) and Jennifer Haslett (West Covina).

Pitcher Brandi Isgar and infielder Natalie Pray of San Dimas were named All-Division III. Catcher Jennifer Giampaolo of Pasadena Poly was All-Division IV.

The Foothill-Citrus Officials Assn. is seeking new members who want to become high school football officials for the upcoming season.

The organization will have its first meeting Aug. 24 at West Covina High.

The Challengers Angling Club is seeking new members.

The club, established in 1953, sponsors monthly fishing trips from February through October and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month for dinner and a program at Covina Bowl in Covina.
