Angel Shoots a 68, but Falls One Stroke Short

Darren Angel of Northridge shot a four-under-par 68 on Thursday to finish second in the Mission Hills Desert Junior golf tournament in Rancho Mirage.

Angel, a sophomore at Granada Hills High, finished one stroke behind Michael Walton of Palm Desert.

Walton, who shot a four-under-par 212, began the day with a nine-stroke lead, but lost nearly all of it with a 76 over the final 18 holes at Mission Hills Country Club.

Angel, who won the City Section title last month, had rounds of 69, 76 and 68 for a total of 213.

Other local finishers were Yannick Bibeau of Moorpark, who tied for 17th at 227, and Matt McCrite of Westlake Village, who tied for 30th at 232.

In other divisions, Kyung Kim of Burbank (77-78-75--230) finished third in the boys’ 13-14 age group, and Elise Kimm of North Hollywood (81-78-77--236) placed 13th in the girls’ 15-18 age group.

Baseball

Montclair Prep infielder Brad Fullmer has been named Southern Section Division IV player of the year. Fuller, a senior, had the division’s best batting average (.568) during the 1993 season and was drafted in the second round by the Montreal Expos earlier this month.

In addition to Fullmer, Calabasas pitcher Josh Morton was a first-team selection. Morton, a junior, was 8-3 with an 0.87 earned-run average. Moorpark infielder Richard Hernandez, a senior who batted .359, was a second-team choice.

L.A. Baptist junior pitcher Matt Hernandez (10-0, 1.83 ERA), Buckley senior infielder Taryll Jackson (.595 average) and Fillmore senior outfielder Louie Garza (.437) were Division V first-team selections.

Paraclete senior infielder Drew Gonzales (.470), St. Bonaventure junior infielder Travis Spurgeon (.450) and Paraclete senior outfielder Brian Lathrop (.567) were named to the second team.

In Division VI, Providence utilityman Robert Mena was a first-team choice. Mena, a junior, was 8-2 with a 1.15 ERA and batted .444.

The Florida Marlins will conduct a tryout camp at Valley College on Thursday for players 16-22. American Legion players must bring a letter of approval from their coach or post commander. Registration is 8:30 a.m. Tryouts start at 9 a.m.

Westlake-Royal’s American Legion baseball team was held to three hits in a 7-0 loss to Seattle on Thursday in a round-robin game of the Sierra Nevada Classic at the University of Nevada.

Brian Fernandez, Curtis Simmons and Brian Schuster each had a singles for Westlake-Royal (1-2 in tournament play), which will play the North Valley Rangers in a second-round game today.

Soccer

Raja Hawa of Thousand Oaks High has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal State Northridge. A 6-foot-1, 165-pound forward, Hawa was a three-year starter for the Lancers, scoring 41 goals and notching 19 assists.

Hawa was a two-time All-Marmonte League selection. He is the third player signed by Coach Marwan Ass’ad.

Two summer soccer camps for children 6 to 14 have been scheduled at Pierce College.

The camps will consist of two five-day sessions. One camp will run from June 28 to July 2, the other from Aug. 9-13. The cost of each five-day session is $150.

Participants will be instructed on basic skills and fundamentals, and will play in mini-tournaments.

Basketball

College of the Canyons and the Santa Clarita Athletic Club will co-sponsor a three-day high school girls’ tournament July 15-17.

Competing teams are Notre Dame, Crescenta Valley, Agoura, Littlerock, Saugus, Canyon, Southern Section Division II champion Alemany and USA Today national champion Peninsula from Palos Verdes.
