NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Bishop Amat’s Peinado Is Division III Player of Year

Jesus Peinado of Bishop Amat High has been selected Southern Section Division III baseball player of the year.

Peinado, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound shortstop and pitcher, helped lead Bishop Amat to a 27-1 record. He was 11-0 with a 2.12 earned-run average and batted .474.

Peinado was 24-2 with a 1.42 ERA in three varsity seasons.

Cynthia Hernandez and Stacy Bunten of Charter Oak High have received $1,000 scholarships for demonstrating outstanding effort on the soccer field and in the classroom.

Hernandez led Charter Oak in scoring and helped the Chargers reach the Southern Section playoffs. She will attend UC Riverside in the fall.

Bunten, who was also one of Charter Oak’s top offensive players, will attend the University of San Diego.

Erin Martin of Temple City and Erin Donovan of South Pasadena also were honored.

Scott Melville, the 1984 Southern Section singles champion from San Marino, lost in the second round of men’s doubles competition at Wimbledon.

Melville and partner Shelby Cannon were eliminated by Patrick Kuhnen of Germany and South African Gary Muller, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 7-5, on Friday. Melville and Cannon were seeded 13th.

Melville, who now lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was 37th on the IBM-ATP doubles rankings entering the two-week Wimbledon tournament.

Melville also fell in the first round of mixed doubles, teaming with Linda Harvey-Wild in a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Francisco Montana and Ei Lida.

Chris Lopez of El Monte and Lorenzo Butanda of West Covina won individual championships at the USA Wrestling Western Regional championships June 14-19 at Ogden, Utah.

Lopez, 10, and Butanda, 9, won the freestyle and Greco-Roman events in their age divisions.

The boys are members of the San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club, which won the California Age Group Wrestling Assn. championship.

The Foothill-Citrus Officials Assn. is seeking new members who want to become high school football officials.

The Challengers Angling Club is seeking fishermen interested in joining the organization, which was established in 1953.

The club sponsors fishing trips once a month, February through October, and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month for dinner and a program at the Covina Bowl in Covina.
