PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Hobert Joins Lonely Hostetler

Share

For most of the two opening day Raider training camp practices Monday, Jeff Hostetler was the team’s only quarterback in uniform.

He took every snap and threw every pass until third-round draft choice Billy Joe Hobert trotted out of the locker room nearly 90 minutes after the start of the afternoon practice at Oxnard.

Hobert’s arrival not only signaled help for Hostetler, but it also represented his being the first of six draft choices to reach a contract agreement with the Raiders.

“When I ran on the field I said to myself, ‘Where are all of the quarterbacks?’ ” said Hobert. “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Hobert’s confusion is understandable because for the last three weeks he was playing baseball for a Chicago White Sox minor league team in Sarasota, Fla., where he batted .302 in 33 at-bats.

Hostetler, who signed as a free agent from the New York Giants last spring, appeared pleased to see Hobert.

“This was the first camp that I’ve ever been in where I was the only quarterback,” said Hostetler, in his ninth season in the NFL.

The Raiders have two other quarterbacks in Vince Evans and Todd Marinovich. Evans is expected to arrive Friday, when the veterans report, and Marinovich may arrive Wednesday.

Coach Art Shell, who had 36 players in uniform Monday, said he hopes to have the team’s remaining five draft choices signed before Friday.
