McGee, Thompson on Disabled List

All-Star second baseman Robby Thompson and outfielder Willie McGee, sixth in the National League in batting, were placed on the 15-day disabled list and third baseman Matt Williams was taken off Wednesday by the San Francisco Giants.

Thompson, hitting .325 with nine homers and 40 RBIs, has a strained left quadriceps muscle and is on the list retroactive to July 5.

McGee, batting .338, is on the disabled list with upper back inflammation, retroactive to July 11.

Williams, who has 21 homers and 64 RBIs, had been on the disabled list since June 28 with a strained lower abdominal muscle.

Outfielder Luis Mercedes has been recalled from triple-A Phoenix and will be in uniform for tonight’s game against the New York Mets.
