LOCAL NOTES : Woods Is a Shot Back at Optimist

Tiger Woods of Cypress shot an opening-round 70 and is one shot off the lead in the boys’ 15-17 division at the Optimist Junior World golf championship Tuesday at Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego.

Chad Wright of Ventura, Pat Perez of Cardiff and Go Higaki of Japan each shot 69.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza and Alicia Allison of Santa Ana advanced Monday in match play at the Women’s Western Golf Assn. national junior championship Tuesday at Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind.

Booth takes on Dodie Mazzuca of Santa Cruz and Allison goes against Erin O’Neil of Zephyrhills, Fla., today in the round of 16.

David Black, a former Southern California College baseball standout, will return to the college as a part-time assistant pitching coach, SCC Coach Charlie Phillips said Tuesday.

Black, a former standout at El Modena High School, had a 16-6 mark and a 1.55 earned-run average at SCC in 1991 and 1992.
