LOCAL NOTES : Canyon Promotes Hughes to Head Football Coach

Bob Hughes has been elevated to head football coach at Canyon High School, replacing Loren Shumer, Athletic Director Steve Anderson said Wednesday.

Hughes has been the team’s defensive coordinator the last four seasons. Shumer will remain the offensive coordinator.

Hughes was the head coach at Villa Park from 1981-83, compiling a 19-12 record. He previously coached at Boron for 10 years.

Shumer was 14-24-2 during his four years as head coach.

Former Western High girls’ soccer Coach Tom Miller has accepted a similar position at Fountain Valley. Miller was a junior varsity girls’ coach at Santa Margarita (1989-90) and Capistrano Valley (1991-92) before his first varsity coaching job last season at Western.

The 1989 Capistrano Valley graduate replaces Dan Scobell.

Miller is in his third year as a soccer trainer for the South Coast and Saddleback Valley soccer clubs. In addition, Miller has been on the support staff of the U.S. men’s national team since March.

Coto de Caza’s Kellee Booth advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Western Golf Assn. by beating Dodie Mazzuca of Santa Cruz 3 and 2 at Knollwood Country Club in Granger, Ind.

Booth, who will be a senior at Santa Margarita in the fall, will face Erin O’Neil of Zephyrhills, Fla., this morning. The semifinals are this afternoon and the final is Friday.

O’Neil advanced by beating Alicia Allison of Santa Ana on the 19th hole. O’Neil parred No. 17 to tie the match, then won on the first extra hole.

Tiger Woods of Cypress shot one-under-par 71 at Torrey Pines and is in fourth place in the boys’ 15-17 division after two rounds of the 72-hole Optimist Junior World golf championship.

Woods trails leader Alberto Morales of Venezuela by two strokes. Chad Wright of Ventura and Patrick Perez of Cardiff are tied for second, a stroke behind Morales.

In the boys’ 13-14 division, Jin and John Park of Fullerton are five strokes behind leader Boyd Summerhays of Farmington, Utah.

Tony Gonzalez of Huntington Beach scored 23 points to lead Orange County to a 73-58 victory over Rockfish I of Los Angeles in the first round of tournament play at the Nike National Prep Basketball Championship in Las Vegas.

Miles Simon of Mater Dei scored 15 points to help South Coast to an 80-60 victory over Santa Barbara. Brian Finnerman had 22 points as Santa Margarita beat Stapleton, Colo., 76-72. Phoenix BCI beat Los Alamitos, 62-54, and Idaho beat Capistrano Valley, 66-58.
