In a move cloaked in secrecy, the New York Yankees optioned Kevin Maas to triple-A Columbus shortly before Friday night’s game. That created room on the 25-man roster for pitcher Mark Hutton, who defeated the Angels in his major league debut. Maas, 28, has had only 11 at-bats since June 16.
The Yankees withheld the announcement until 45 minutes before game time. That’s when reporters have to clear the clubhouse.
