PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : A Day for Defense and for Officials

Jeff Hostetler and Alexander Wright combined on a 41-yard pass play for a touchdown to highlight an intrasquad scrimmage for the Raiders on Saturday at Oxnard.

The offense had 35 yards in penalties, but Hostetler completed all five of his passes for 81 yards and the touchdown.

“We were a little rough at first, but then we settled down,” said Hostetler, who worked against the defensive second team. “It felt good to get out there and to get some work in.”

Coach Art Shell said he was pleased with Hostetler and Wright, who caught two passes for 60 yards, but not with the team’s mental mistakes.

“(Overall,) it wasn’t a very good practice,” Shell said. “When you’re put into a game situation, you have to react. I don’t think the response was very good on both sides of the ball.”

The first-team defense dominated the second-team offense, limiting the unit to 21 yards. Quarterback Vince Evans was pressured and completed only one of nine passes, with one interception by Dan Land. Linebacker Aaron Wallace recorded the scrimmage’s only sack.

In the matchup between the two third-team units, the offense was no match for the defense. Defensive linemen Ferric Collins and Alberto White were impressive.

“Our defense was coming off the ball pretty good,” Shell said.

The only injury came late in the scrimmage when quarterback Todd Marinovich, who completed his two passes for 25 yards, suffered a sprained ankle when Collins fell on his legs after a pass.

Nick Bell led the Raider running backs with 14 yards in four carries and one catch for seven yards. Gaston Green had 10 yards in four carries, running against the first-team defense. Free-agent tight end John Duff had two catches for 25 yards.
